Cody Rhodes will finally get his hands on Randy Orton at the first-ever Sunday Night’s Main Event. SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis confirmed the singles match on social media Saturday, one day after Orton ambushed Rhodes in Boston.
The bout takes place Sunday, September 6 at State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Georgia, the city Rhodes is billed from.
Aldis delivered the news in a video announcement. “I’m pleased to announce that I have followed through on the promise I made to Cody last night on SmackDown when I told him I would do everything I could to make it happen. I am here today to tell you that I have made it happen,” Aldis said.
“Sunday, September the 6th, Sunday Night’s Main Event, State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Georgia, Cody Rhodes gets his chance at revenge when he goes one-on-one with Randy Orton.”
How Rhodes And Orton Got Here
Orton returned at SummerSlam Night 1 in Minneapolis on August 1, storming the ring during Rhodes’ Undisputed WWE Championship challenge and dropping his former protégé with an RKO. CM Punk followed with a Go To Sleep and retained the title.
Rhodes pushed Aldis for the match on Friday’s SmackDown from TD Garden, and Aldis floated Sunday Night’s Main Event while telling him Orton wasn’t in the building. Orton turned up anyway, jumping Rhodes as Sami Zayn made his entrance for their scheduled main event. The two brawled through the arena before Rhodes escaped a chair shot with a low blow, on a night that also saw multiple titles change hands.
The last singles meeting between the two came at Night 1 of WrestleMania 42, where Rhodes went over his old mentor.
