John Cena is putting an end to one theory fans have held onto since his shocking 2025 heel turn. He said that he didn’t sell his soul to The Rock.
Speaking at Fan Expo, Cena addressed the idea directly, saying fans took the “soul selling” language far more literally than he ever intended. The phrase traced back to The Rock trying to get Cody Rhodes to hand himself over to The Final Boss ahead of Elimination Chamber 2025.
Cody refused, and moments later Cena entered the picture, hugged Cody after winning the match, then turned and joined The Rock and Travis Scott in attacking him. This led to fans assuming Cena had taken the very deal Cody had rejected.
Cena rejected that read entirely, pointing out that if that logic held, Travis Scott would have had to sell his soul too, joking that there isn’t actually a “soul for sale” arrangement at play.
His real explanation was much simpler: that he turned because he wanted another world championship, not because of any deal with The Rock.
He was direct in ruling out any behind-the-scenes arrangement, saying flatly that he and The Rock (whom he referred to by his “DJ” nickname) simply have a good relationship, and that giving up his soul was never part of it.
Everybody says I sold my soul to The Rock, just because Cody and Rock were talking about soul selling, and I happen to get in there. No, I just wanted to win a championship. The Rock doesn’t have my soul. I just want to make this clear, we did not have a soul deal. DJ and I, we have a good relationship, I don’t need to also give him my soul.
Cena’s message now is clear: there was no soul transaction behind one of the most talked-about turns of his career.
