A new report claims that Sheamus grew disillusioned with WWE’s creative direction because the company repeatedly declined to book him for the one title standing between him and a Grand Slam.
His departure from WWE and his rejection of a smaller contract offer have already been reported, but this detail points to the core creative grievance behind the decision.
According to Self-Made Pro, Sheamus “gave up” on WWE Creative after being repeatedly denied the Intercontinental Title despite storylines built around his pursuit of it. The report notes that WWE booked Sheamus to lose every shot he had at the championship.
The Intercontinental Title is the one championship keeping Sheamus from completing the Grand Slam, as he is a former World, United States, and Tag Team Champion. Multiple storylines centered on his desire to capture the belt, yet none ended with him holding the gold.
Sheamus And WWE Parting Ways
It was reported that Sheamus is set to leave WWE after 19 years with the promotion. He is still under contract but is expected to depart once his current deal expires, after turning down a proposed restructured extension.
Because his contract is expiring rather than being terminated, he will not be subject to a 90-day non-compete clause. WWE has already moved Sheamus to the Alumni section of WWE.com even though his deal has not yet run out.
