WWE SummerSlam 2026 is in the books and received a generally positive reception from the fans, particularly for Night Two. A major point of intrigue emerging from this tentpole event on the WWE calendar is that the company is pressing the reset button on its world title pictures.
Cody Rhodes looks to be cycling out of the WWE Championship picture, Roman Reigns is ready for a fresh challenger for the World Heavyweight Championship, and, in winning the Night One main event, Oba Femi has shored up his spot as an imminent top title contender.
Indeed, the choice to main event Night One with Femi vs. Brock Lesnar inside Hell in a Cell and Night Two with Reigns vs. Seth Rollins seems to suggest bookends of the future for the World Heavyweight Championship.
WWE Further Cemented Oba Femi’s Place As A Future World Champion
Oba Femi accomplished a lot at SummerSlam. He picked up his first one-on-one victory in a Big Four PLE main event. He picked up his first victory inside Hell in a Cell. And, not least importantly, The Ruler definitively won his feud against Brock Lesnar, retiring The Beast and even getting a rare in-ring show of respect from the vanquished Conqueror post-match.
Femi had already beaten Lesnar at WrestleMania and gone on to win the King of the Ring tournament. This latest victory further establishes Femi as WWE’s future. While there’s a case to be made he hasn’t yet eclipsed the stardom of guys like Roman Reigns, Cody Rhodes, and CM Punk, it’s remarkable that with just a half-year on the main roster, he has entered the conversation alongside those names as the most credible main event acts in the company.
So it is that Femi’s coronation as a world champ feels inevitable. The question is if WWE pulls the trigger by year’s end—perhaps at Survivor Series—or holds off until WrestleMania, maybe winning the Royal Rumble along the way.
The WWE Championship Picture Is Full For The Rest Of The Year
Coming out of WrestleMania 42, some pundits saw Oba Femi moving into the WWE Championship picture. After the thoroughly underwhelming Cody Rhodes vs. Randy Orton WWE Championship match, and with The American Nightmare feeling a little stale on top, strapping that particular rocket to The Ruler made a lot of sense, whereas Roman Reigns had a lot of mileage ahead of him after winning his first world title in two years.
Fast forward to the aftermath of SummerSlam, and the landscape is quite different. Femi, Brock Lesnar, and the Hell in a Cell gimmick collectively got the main event nod over the WWE Championship match Night One. That’s not to say there isn’t a lot going on for the WWE Championship scene, though.
Indeed, CM Punk is a credible champion and, in a loss related to outside interference, Rhodes can’t be counted out from the title picture. It was a returning Orton who cost him, projecting that The Viper will pick up where he left off as a main eventer and WWE title threat. Add on Kevin Owens making a surprise return and winning number one contendership on Night Two, while Gunther, Finn Balor, and especially Sami Zayn have reason to gripe about The Prize Fighter’s impromptu addition to their match, and there are an incredible number of different permutations for where WWE can go with this world title through the rest of 2026 and maybe even straight through to WrestleMania—none of which involve Femi.
WWE Put To Rest Two Seth Rollins Stories
On the face of it, one of the biggest stories coming out of SummerSlam was WWE seemingly putting The Shield to rest once and for all. The Roman Reigns vs. Seth Rollins angle was largely built around their shared history in the faction and settling, once and for all, who was the best wrestler to emerge from the group. In an unlikely turn, the guys even paid homage to Dean Ambrose—who got called out on commentary—before striking The Shield pose one more time after the final bell.
The story of The Visionary’s time with The Shield and years-long off-and-on rivalry with Reigns wasn’t the only narrative WWE completed at SummerSlam, though. The match also looked as though it put a period at the end of Rollins being the defining figure in the modern World Heavyweight Championship lineage.
Rollins was the first man to hold the new World Heavyweight Championship and he held onto it for nearly a year, putting on great matches, working hurt, and going a long way toward establishing the new belt’s credibility. From there, him cashing in Money in the Bank to take that title off CM Punk at last year’s SummerSlam before becoming the first man to win the Crown Jewel Championship while holding it further shored up his spot as the man as far as this World Heavyweight title was concerned.
It’s unclear where Rollins goes next in WWE. He’s on the bubble as one of WWE’s top five biggest stars and more assuredly one of its five best in-ring performers. He also has a lot of miles and numerous serious injuries on his record.
There’s no indication The Visionary will retire anytime soon, but taking a bit of time away could make sense, after which he’s a great utility player WWE can throw into all kinds of scenarios upon his return. He may well settle into a role as a “break glass in case of emergency” performer—not a planned world champ, but someone WWE can always sub into the main event if the injury bug strikes or the booking team is out of better ideas.
Oba Femi Vs. Roman Reigns Has Dream Match Vibes
Now that Oba Femi has decisively defeated Brock Lesnar, there aren’t that many guys who feel immediately credible as opponents to him. It’s a situation not so dissimilar from twenty-four years earlier, when Lesnar beat The Rock at SummerSlam.
Bron Breakker is a fair enough stop-gap opponent to space things out and to make some sense as second biggest main eventer in waiting, whom WWE Unreal sold the narrative of just missing his chance for the big push this past WrestleMania season. After that, though, where could Femi go?
All roads lead to Roman Reigns, still WWE’s biggest star of the present generation, a solid worker, and the best protected of main event guys. All that’s not to mention he’s another statue-esque powerhouse who will look good on posters opposite The Ruler’s imposing form.
Make no mistake about it—Reigns vs. Femi is the destination and likely as not the match that formally coronates Femi as a world champion and “the guy.” Lesnar explicitly called him “the future” at the end of SummerSlam Night One. WWE’s hardest task will be to not make everything else feel like filler until they’re ready to stage this match for the first time.
