Tony Khan believes the pandemic levelled the playing field for AEW.
The AEW President recently had an interview with Yahoo Finance. He talked about things such as what he has learned from his father, how analytics have changed sport, why he got into the wrestling business and more.
While talking about earning respect as a leader in AEW, the wrestling executive mentioned how he went from being very hands on with creative to being the only person backstage due to the pandemic in the second year of the company’s existence. When asked what that experience was like, Tony Khan claimed that it was the best thing that ever happened to the promotion:
That was the best experience I ever had. That’s the best thing that ever happened to the company. It really leveled the odds for the two wrestling promotions and so many people around the world, to this day, talk about the quality of wrestling and say when you put it back like that and put it on a level playing field, so many people saw that AEW is the best wrestling. For me, that was the best experience, and those are the shows I’m most proud of.
Both AEW and WWE were forced to abandon their touring schedule in favor of a more studio-style show due to the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020. It was more than a year before both promotions were able to go back on road for events in July 2021.
