Matt Hardy has opened up about Vince McMahon’s perception of him.
The wrestling veteran recently talked about the former WWE owner on the latest episode of his Extreme Life podcast. The Attitude Era star mentioned how McMahon saw some wrestlers only in certain roles. He gave the example of Edge and Jeff Hardy who Vince saw as the bigger stars than him or Christian.
Matt Hardy noted that Mr. McMahon still liked both him and Cage and took great care of them. He then gave an example of the former WWE owner’s thinking, recalling how the boss was urging him to end his in-ring career and become a full-time producer towards the end of his last run with the company:
Much like at the very end before I left WWE, they were trying to get me to re-sign. But Vince was really trying to get me just to be a full-time producer or coach or whatever, agent. I said, ‘Dude, I want to wrestle while I can. If I can still wrestle, that’s what I would like to do.’

Matt and Jeff Hardy made their surprise return to WWE during WrestleMania 33 in 2017. Matt later introduced the ‘Woken’ gimmick and went on to work with Bray Wyatt both as rival and partner. He ended this run with the company in March 2020, and according to Matt Hardy, Vince McMahon would have definitely turned him into a producer had he decided to stay with the company:
I could just see how he saw me in that role. I know if I re-signed there, I might, for a couple months, do this cool angle with me and Windham as The Fiend and Jeff as Willow, but then he is going to put me back into that role. Because that is how he sees me and that is what he wants. Vince always got what he wants.
The former WWE star signed with AEW after his WWE departure and stayed with Tony Khan’s promotion till 2024. He has been a part of TNA roster since then.
