Baron Corbin believes getting released by WWE ended up being the turning point his career needed.
After spending more than a decade with the company, Corbin’s WWE contract expired in late 2024 and was not renewed, bringing a 12-year run to an unexpected end. While the departure initially came as a shock, he said it forced him to rediscover himself both personally and professionally.
On “Busted Open Radio” podcast, Corbin admitted that being let go initially felt like a major setback. However, time away from WWE allowed him to step back, reassess his career, and rediscover the passion that had fueled him before reaching the industry’s biggest stage.
A Fresh Start Outside WWE
Corbin said that his time away from WWE helped him learn and grow without ‘the machine.’ He said,
I think when you’re doing it without that big machine behind you, when you’re having to go to different shows, it’s a testament to how much you love it and where your passion is. If you want to get better without the help of that machine and you’re doing it on your own, I think you can grow exponentially.
“Whereas if you have the machine, you can take things for granted. ‘I’ve already made it,’ all of that. It’s different when you’re on the outside.
Rather than viewing the release as a failure, Corbin described it as the best thing that could have happened to him. The time away allowed him to explore new opportunities, wrestle in different environments, and remind both fans and himself what he was capable of outside the WWE system.
I’m not the same guy I was when I left. I hope people have forgotten about me so I can remind them how dangerous I truly am. When I came in in the beginning as the Lone Wolf, that was the attitude I had, and I think I got lost along the way a little bit. Going away might have been the best thing ever for me and what I’m going to accomplish between those ropes.
Looking Back Without Regret
During his time away from WWE, he learned to never take the interest of paying wrestling fans for granted. He said:
In WWE, sometimes we can take it for granted that we’re in front of 10,000 people, 50,000 people, 80,000 people. The entrances, your travel is taken care of, your schedule is handed to you. Everything is kind of spoon-fed to you.
When you come out and you have to start booking your own stuff, you’re in control of getting to the shows, you have to set a price, you have to do all of these things.
That renewed confidence ultimately paved the way for Corbin’s WWE return in 2026.
After making his surprise comeback, Corbin quickly re-established himself as a major player, targeting the United States Championship almost immediately. His resurgence culminated at SummerSlam 2026, where he defeated Trick Williams to capture the United States Title.
