Mickie Knuckles is being treated in a hospital burn unit.
The independent veteran was burned during a P.O.R. Wrestling match in late August when a fire spot went wrong. Knuckles was thrown into a wooden box that had been set alight. A fire extinguisher was used and someone nearby pulled her clear, but several seconds passed before that happened.
She said afterward that she had not gone to the hospital and would not be starting a fundraiser. Both of those have since changed.
As many of you have seen, one of my best friends, Mickie Knuckles, was badly burned during a wrestling match. A couple of days later, her injuries required her to be admitted to the hospital’s burn unit, where she remains receiving treatment and beginning what may be a difficult road to recovery.
That is Joshua Evans, a friend who organized a GoFundMe titled Support Mickie Knuckles’ Healing Journey. It is seeking $25,000 for medical costs and lost income. Knuckles has already had to cancel several bookings, and wrestling is how she supports her two children.
Right now, Mickie’s only job should be getting better, not worrying about how she is going to provide for her children while she is unable to work.
In her video after the match, Knuckles said she believed she had asked the right questions beforehand, including about the fluid being used, and that everyone involved did the best they could. She said she was grateful nobody else was seriously hurt. Another wrestler who was already inside the box suffered burns that were mostly surface level.
She added that she probably needs to get better at saying no to spots like that one.
Footage has circulated widely since. Knuckles has asked that her supporters and her critics not turn on each other, and that her children be kept out of it.
Knuckles is 42. She came up through IWA Mid-South in the early 2000s and had a brief run with TNA in 2008.
