SmackDown Tonight Brings CM Punk Back Before Money In The Bank

WWE SmackDown airs tonight (Friday, October 9, 2026) from the Cajundome in Lafayette, Louisiana, live on USA Network starting at 8 p.m. ET.

It’s the go-home show for Money in the Bank, which takes place tomorrow night at the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans. CM Punk is advertised to return, Fatal Influence puts the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship on the line against Charlotte Flair and Tatum Paxley, and SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis has promised every competitor from both ladder matches will be in the building. Here’s the full card, the stories to watch and how to tune in.

SmackDown Match Card for October 9, 2026

Here are the matches and segments WWE has announced for tonight’s show:

CM Punk Returns to SmackDown

Punk comes back one night before his best shot at getting the gold back. He lost the Undisputed WWE Championship to Sami Zayn on the September 11 SmackDown in Mexico City, when Kevin Owens accidentally struck him with the title belt and Zayn finished him with a Helluva Kick. Punk then beat Gunther and Finn Bálor in a triple threat on September 25 to win the qualifier that put him in New Orleans.

The friction with Owens runs both ways. One week after Mexico City, Punk cracked Owens with the title during Owens’ championship match against Zayn, and Zayn retained. Both men are now in Saturday’s ladder match, and both are scheduled to be under the same roof tonight.

Fatal Influence (Fallon Henley and Lainey Reid) (c) vs. Charlotte Flair and Tatum Paxley (WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship Match)

Flair and Paxley already own a win over the champions. They beat Henley and Reid in a non-title match on the September 4 SmackDown in Cleveland, with Paxley pinning Reid after a Cemetery Drive. Jade Cargill, B-Fab and Michin jumped Flair, Paxley and Alexa Bliss after that match, so the challengers have more than one problem on the blue brand.

Tonight’s title shot came together after Paxley lost the final Women’s Money in the Bank qualifier last Friday in Denver. Backstage, Flair told her that she and Bliss had gone to Aldis and secured the championship match.

Every Money in the Bank Competitor Set to Appear

Aldis said in a WWE digital exclusive after last week’s show that all 12 ladder match competitors will be at the Cajundome. The men’s field is Punk, Owens, Penta, Je’Von Evans, United States Champion Trick Williams and Bron Breakker. The women’s field is Tiffany Stratton, Women’s United States Champion Jacy Jayne, Roxanne Perez, Lash Legend, Sol Ruca and Lola Vice.

Stratton and Owens claimed the last two spots last week. Stratton pinned Candice LeRae in a triple threat that also included Paxley, and Owens beat Johnny Gargano and Cody Rhodes after Randy Orton pulled the referee out of the ring to stop a Rhodes win.

The Champion Without a Match

Undisputed WWE Champion Sami Zayn isn’t booked for Money in the Bank, which makes him the obvious target for whoever takes the men’s briefcase. Last week Evans, Penta, Williams, Bálor and Gunther all confronted him in the ring, with Penta openly talking about cashing in on him. How Zayn’s second title reign is viewed internally adds another layer to how this plays out.

Rhodes doesn’t have a Saturday match either. After Orton cost him his qualifier, Rhodes chased him through the crowd as last week’s show went off the air, and that rivalry has nowhere to land in New Orleans.
