Adam Copeland finally crossed one of the biggest venues off his wrestling bucket list — and by his own account, it exceeded every expectation.
Copeland competed at Arena México for the first time as part of AEW’s Grand Slam: Mexico event, teaming with Christian Cage, Matt Jackson, and Nick Jackson in an eight-man tag match against Jon Moxley, Daniel Garcia, Pac, and Wheeler Yuta.
It marked his first match in Mexico since 2008, and his first time ever stepping into what he’s long called “The Wrestling Cathedral.”
After the match, Copeland reflected on the experience in even more personal terms, describing the night as one he’ll carry with him for the rest of his life. He said it took 34 years to finally step inside those hallowed halls, and that after 18 years away from wrestling in Mexico, doing it at Arena México felt like the perfect way to cap off his long-running love affair with lucha libre and the country itself. He closed simply, thanking Mexico for a night he won’t forget.
What. A. Night. Finally, finally after 34 years I was privileged to step into The Wrestling Cathedral. Arena Mexico. And man, Mexico you did not disappoint.
I felt the vibrations in my bones when I came out. It’d been 18 years since I last performed in Mexico and to finally do it in those hallowed halls, the perfect way to cap off my love affair with Lucha Libre and Mexico.
I’ll take last night to the grave with me. Gracias Mexico.
