Adam Copeland wrestles inside Arena Mexico for the first time in his career tonight, and it’s also his first match anywhere in Mexico since 2008.
The AEW World Tag Team Champion teams with Christian Cage and the Young Bucks against the Death Riders quartet of Jon Moxley, PAC, Wheeler Yuta and Daniel Garcia in the eight-man tag added to the Grand Slam Mexico card last week. Cage and Copeland defend the belts against Matt and Nick Jackson at All In on August 30, so the alliance comes with a built-in coexistence problem.
Copeland addressed the moment in a post ahead of the show:
Tonight I get to perform for the first time in The Wrestling Cathedral. Arena Mexico. The last time I had a match in Mexico was 2008. Mexico we got some catching up to do! I love Lucha Libre. Everything about it. The masks, the mystique, the pageantry. Can’t wait to get out there. See ya soon Mexico, bring your voices.
The building has been on his list for a while. Copeland named Arena Mexico alongside Wembley Stadium, Maple Leaf Gardens and the Tokyo Dome when he laid out the last venues he wants to work before he’s done.
Tonight is the second annual Grand Slam Mexico, AEW’s return to the CMLL home base. The eight-man tag sits on a card carrying two title matches and a Mexico City Street Fight between Will Ospreay and Mark Davis. Start time and the full lineup are here.
