Andrade El Idolo finally has AEW gold to his name.
The former WWE star dethroned Mark Davis to become the new AEW National Champion at the Bell Centre in Montreal, capturing his first-ever championship in the promotion.
Andrade controlled the early going before Davis slowed the pace with his powerful offense. When Andrade tried to mount a comeback, Davis cut him off with a clothesline, but Andrade answered with a double knee strike in the corner and a hurricanrana that sent Davis crashing into the ring post. A rolling moonsault got Andrade a near fall, and he closed the show with his finisher for the win.
The victory carries extra weight given the history. Andrade has had multiple runs in AEW without ever winning a title, a fact the company leaned into during the build to this match. It also comes at Davis’s expense following the breakup of the Don Callis Family faction, as Andrade and Davis had been aligned before Andrade split from the group at Forbidden Door.
For a performer with Andrade’s pedigree, a first piece of AEW hardware is a meaningful milestone, and one that had eluded him for years until Montreal.
