“Superstar” Bill Dundee, the Scottish-born Australian who spent four decades as one of the defining figures of the Memphis wrestling territory, has died at the age of 82.
Podcast host and promoter Conrad Thompson reported the news on X, writing that Dundee had “passed away this morning” and describing him as a brilliant wrestling mind and performer for decades. No cause of death has been disclosed, and no statement from the Dundee family had surfaced at the time of writing.
The timing is brutal. Barely three weeks ago, Jerry Lawler appeared in a Memphis Wrestling clip and asked his old rival directly whether he had one more match left in him. Dundee had not wrestled since December 2019. In September 2023, his son Jamie Dundee revealed on Story Time with Dutch Mantell that his father was living with late-stage dementia.
The Other King Of Memphis
Born William Cruickshanks in Angus, Scotland on October 24, 1943, Dundee moved to Melbourne as a boy and joined the circus at 16 as a trapeze artist. He debuted in Australia in 1962 and landed in the United States in 1974 alongside tag partner George Barnes.
What followed made him a regional institution. His 1977 program with Lawler remains one of the most-copied feuds in American wrestling, running through a car stipulation, the Southern Heavyweight Championship, and a hair-versus-hair finish that ended with both Dundee and his wife Beverly getting their heads shaved on camera. Dundee racked up 14 recognized AWA Southern Tag Team Championship reigns with partners ranging from Lawler himself to Tommy Rich, Dutch Mantel and Robert Gibson, and he booked the territory as well as working it.
National exposure came briefly and awkwardly. WCW brought him in as Sir William, the monocled manager for Lord Steven Regal, before firing him in October 1994 over a contract dispute. He was inducted into the Memphis Wrestling Hall of Fame with the class of 2017.
His final match came on December 14, 2019 at a Knoxville benefit show honoring his son-in-law Bobby Eaton. He was 76.
A Family That Has Buried Too Many
Dundee’s death caps a decade of loss for one of wrestling’s deepest families. His wife Beverly died in May 2016. His daughter Donna died in June 2021, weeks before her husband Bobby Eaton, one of the finest tag team workers of his generation. Jamie Dundee’s son Austin died in January 2024 at 33.
Jamie, who wrestled as JC Ice and later as part of the Nation of Domination, survived a truck rollover in January of this year.
