Kevin Owens has a date and a building for his Undisputed WWE Championship shot. On the August 7 SmackDown, Owens asked Nick Aldis to book his match with CM Punk for the August 21 episode in Toronto, and the general manager agreed.
The request came backstage, where Sami Zayn was already in Aldis’ office complaining about the SummerSlam finish that cost him a title shot. Owens told his friend he had waited too long to get Punk in the ring, then walked off with a reminder of how fresh the comeback still is. “Six days. I’ve been back for six days,” he said.
Punk And Owens Open SmackDown At Each Other’s Throats
The two opened the show in the ring in Philadelphia, with Aldis stepping out to keep the peace. Owens said he never believed the people telling him Punk had changed, pointing to Punk offering Cody Rhodes another title match while Owens was the one holding the number one contendership. He later called Punk an “arrogant sociopath.”
Punk answered by claiming credit for Owens’ career.
If anybody has benefited from what I went through to get here and the things I did and said to knock down doors for guys like you, you benefited the most. This place called me skinny fat. You think they were waiting around, holding their breath for Kevin Owens?
Owens closed the segment by thanking Punk for showing him what not to become, saying his ego had gotten so inflated that he had started believing his own Best in the World billing.
Seeing what you’ve become has made me determined to not let this business turn me into a miserable piece of s*** like you.
Owens shoved Punk, and Aldis and a group of officials got between them before it turned into a brawl.
Toronto Already Has A Complication
Owens earned the shot at SummerSlam, where Aldis turned a planned Sami Zayn vs. Finn Balor number one contender’s match into a fatal four way by adding GUNTHER and then Owens, who pinned Zayn in his first match in 17 months. He has been open about not planning to pace himself now that he is cleared to wrestle.
Oba Femi is also advertised for the August 21 show at Scotiabank Arena, and his King of the Ring win still entitles him to challenge for either Roman Reigns’ World Heavyweight Championship or Punk’s title. The Toronto date sits in the middle of WWE’s Canadian run, which also includes a Summer Tour stop in London on August 20 and Raw in Ottawa on August 24.
