Kevin Owens has been told by almost everyone around him to take it easy. He does not intend to.
Owens returned at SummerSlam on Sunday after 17 months out, was added to the No. 1 Contender’s match by Nick Aldis and won it. He addressed what comes next on the post-show.
I’m not back to half—- this stuff. I’ve been told by everyone, the WWE medical staff, my family, even my surgeon, ‘Please be careful.’ And I told all of them, ‘Okay, I’ll be careful.'
He was not telling them the truth.
I’m never being careful. I am giving everything I have always. If that means I’m done in two years, that means I’m done in two years. But we’re gonna have a blast for two years.
Hopefully it’s longer than that, but you’re never getting less than everything I have. I promise you that.
The context behind it is serious. Owens last wrestled at Elimination Chamber on March 3, 2025, beating Sami Zayn in an unsanctioned match. He pulled out of a WrestleMania 41 match with Randy Orton weeks later and had neck fusion surgery in July 2025. He has said publicly that there were no guarantees he would wrestle again.
He kept working through it, coaching on season three of WWE LFG and hosting the NXT Great American Bash pre-show.
Sunday was the answer. Owens hit running sentons and a swanton off the top, sold the neck between spots, and pinned Zayn with the Stunner to become the next challenger for CM Punk’s Undisputed WWE Championship.
The Wrestling Observer reported last week that Owens and Orton were both expected back very soon. Orton returned Saturday. Owens returned a night later.
