John Cena has never been subtle about calling spots in the ring, and Cody Rhodes just confirmed it’s entirely on purpose.
Longtime fans know Cena can regularly be heard loudly telling opponents what’s coming next, something he’s never seemed bothered about hiding. On Amy Poehler’s Good Hang podcast, Rhodes explained the philosophy behind it.
John will not talk low or ‘in carny.’ John yells everything that is going to happen in the ring as loud as he can possibly yell it. He calls it, for the first four rows, an interactive experience. Screams it.
Rhodes then pulled a story from their SummerSlam 2025 Street Fight, the Cena retirement-tour classic where the American Nightmare regained the Undisputed WWE Championship. One sequence saw Cena hoist Cody up for an Attitude Adjustment from one table through another.
At SummerSlam, he’s about to slam me with the Attitude Adjustment from a table to another table. It’s highly dangerous; it’s going to hurt. We’re going to do it the safest way we can, but you can hear him yelling at me while I’m on his shoulders that he can’t see because my arm is over his eyes. I never spoke back to John, I never wanted to speak back, he’s a mentor to me, but it was one of those moments where I thought, ‘Buddy, I’m the one doing it. Just throw me.'
A word of caution: Rhodes has a well-earned reputation for embellishing a good story in interviews, so the finer details are best enjoyed with a grain of salt. Still, the “interactive experience” bit lines up with what fans have been hearing at ringside for years.
