Gunther has made no secret of wanting to climb back to the top of WWE’s title picture, but the Ring General says he refuses to measure his career only by whether he’s holding a world championship.
Speaking on the Complex Graps Wrestling Podcast, Gunther was asked whether his rivalries with Sami Zayn and now Nick Aldis have pulled focus away from a title run. He didn’t dodge the premise that titles matter — winning gold, he said, is the goal every wrestler is chasing.
But he pushed back on the idea that time spent outside the title picture equals a lack of success, pointing out there are only two world championships and a deep roster competing for them, making constant title contention unrealistic for anyone.
Obviously the big title is every wrestler’s goal,” he said. “That’s what we’re doing it for, championships, you wanna be the best in the world. Everybody should strive for that.”
“That being said, if you’re only satisfied once you’re in that top picture or competing for that title, then you’re not gonna be satisfied very often because there’s only two titles and there’s a lot of us guys. So you won’t be able to do it all the time.
Special Occasion Matches
Instead, Gunther pointed to a different measuring stick: the “special occasion” matches that don’t need championship stakes to matter. He named his bouts against Goldberg, John Cena, and AJ Styles — as well as his crossover match with Pat McAfee — as moments he approached with the same seriousness as a title defense, viewing them as a chance to entertain and represent the business well regardless of what’s on the line.
I like to do those special occasion matches if that makes sense,” he said.
“I think all the matches I had with Goldberg, Cena, AJ, are good examples. Even Pat McAfee. Those are matches in a different light in a different situation, and I see that as a challenge because at the end of the day, you’ve gotta entertain the viewer and do good for the business and the sport of pro-wrestling.”
“I like those challenges and I like being in those special moments, and making them exciting as well.
The comments come with immediate context: after WrestleMania 42, Gunther was squarely in the Undisputed WWE Championship conversation before a feud with SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis took over his summer.
