Zilla Fatu made his WWE debut on the August 11 episode of NXT, wiping out the No. 1 contender’s match that was supposed to set Tony D’Angelo’s challenger for Heatwave.
Grayson Waller and Cruz Montana closed the show with a spot in that title match on the line. Montana put Waller down with his Spin the Block clothesline and moved in for the cover, only for Fatu to hit the ring and flatten both men with Samoan Splashes.
Fatu then turned toward the commentary desk, where D’Angelo was seated, and declared that the new champion had arrived. The match was ruled a no contest.
That leaves NXT in an awkward spot. D’Angelo’s defense at Heatwave is already announced for August 30 at Bert Ogden Arena in Edinburg, Texas, but the challenger slot is now empty with under three weeks to go. Fatu made it obvious he wants it.
How Fatu Landed On Tuesday Nights
News that Fatu had signed a WWE contract circulated hours before the show, following a Performance Center visit and a Fightful Select report in June that a deal was expected if it had not already been completed.
He wrapped his independent commitments over the weekend, dropping the House of Glory Crown Jewel Championship to Amazing Red and getting a send-off from the crowd on the way out.
Fatu, 26, is the son of the late Umaga and a member of the Anoa’i family, with Jacob Fatu, Solo Sikoa and The Usos among his cousins. He debuted in 2023 after training under Booker T at Reality of Wrestling, and reporting ahead of his arrival pointed to an NXT run before any move into the Bloodline story on the main roster.
The timing works for WWE. Heatwave runs opposite AEW All In from Wembley Stadium and doubles as NXT’s first livestreamed event on ESPN, so a fresh Anoa’i name in the title picture carries real weight.
The rest of the card is filling in around the gap. Kelani Jordan will challenge Kendal Grey for the NXT Women’s Championship, and Zaria and Wren Sinclair were booked in a title unification match on the same show.
