AEW has confirmed the Continental Cup, a 16-man single-elimination tournament that will include mystery entrants and puts Jon Moxley’s AEW Continental Championship on the line. The tournament wraps up at All In: London on August 30.
AEW says the concept is inspired by England’s FA Cup, and the winner will keep the Continental Cup trophy permanently rather than defending it as a rotating prize. That detail sets it apart from AEW’s other tournament hardware, none of which the winner gets to keep outright.
The announcement arrived one night after Moxley himself let the news slip. On the July 29 episode of Dynamite, after retaining his title against Komander, Moxley referenced “backstage” buzz about a mystery tournament, saying he had no idea who he would be facing but was ready to run to the fire regardless of the challengers.
AEW had been building toward some version of this concept for months. The company filed a trademark application for “Continental Cup” with the United States Patent and Trademark Office back in March, though at the time it was unclear whether the filing referred to a trophy, a new tournament, or an added element of the existing Continental Classic.
This new Cup is a separate animal from that annual round-robin event. Rather than a points-based league format, the Continental Cup runs as a straight single-elimination bracket, with mystery entrants adding an unpredictable layer as Moxley heads toward AEW’s return to Wembley Stadium, where Will Ospreay’s Owen Hart Cup win has already set up a world title match against Kenny Omega on the same card.
Fans Draw G1 Climax Comparisons
The reveal drew immediate reaction online, with fans comparing the format to New Japan Pro Wrestling’s G1 Climax and New Japan Cup tournaments, both of which AEW has drawn inspiration from in the past. Some of the response has also questioned how another marquee tournament fits into a calendar that already includes the Continental Classic and the Owen Hart Cup, alongside AEW’s expanding championship lineup.
No participants have been confirmed for the Continental Cup field yet. AEW is expected to reveal the bracket in the coming weeks as the promotion builds its card for All In: London, which streams live on HBO Max PPV from Wembley Stadium.
