CM Punk retains.

Tonight’s episode of SmackDown, coming live from Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, was main evented by Kevin Owens challenging the Straight Edge Star for the WWE Championship. The ending of the bout saw Punk knocking out the referee inadvertently as he shoved Owens away. Kevin then delivered a stunner to the WWE Champion but there was no referee for his pin.

After hitting a GTS of his own, Punk went to check on the referee, only for Sami Zayn to show up out of nowhere. Zayn shoved the defending champion into the ringpost and then sent him back inside along with the referee. The champ, however, somehow managed to still kick out of another pin attempt.

Zayn then grabbed the WWE title belt and handed it to his best friend. Kevin Owens teased using the belt but ultimately decided not to, leading to Sami clocking him with the belt instead. This allowed CM Punk to hit the GTS and the referee miraculously recovered at that moment to count the pin.

Punk celebrated his victory after the bell, but Sami Zayn took him out with the title belt. Zayn then hit Owens with the belt as well, and he was the only one left standing as the show went off air.
