CM Punk’s attempt to make peace with Cody Rhodes on WWE’s SummerSlam Kickoff show ended with a deliberate shove to the face. What started as an apology collapsed into a personal shouting match about ego, paranoia, and trust, and by the time security pulled them apart, whatever was left between the two had evaporated.
The confrontation came one night after a heated exchange the two had following Saturday Night’s Main Event. Instead of cooling off, Punk and Rhodes picked the argument back up on WWE‘s SummerSlam Kickoff programming, with the Undisputed WWE Championship match between them now officially set.
Rhodes wasted little time shutting the apology down. He admitted he wasn’t proud of how the previous night played out but refused to walk any of it back, and he made clear he was finished pretending the two shared any kind of bond.
“I’m embarrassed about it, but I’m not apologizing for it. And I’m a little done with this ‘brother’ thing because you’re not my brother,” Rhodes said.
Punk Calls Rhodes Paranoid
Punk fired back that the problem was never the belt clipping Rhodes in the eye the night before. It was Rhodes’ ego. He pointed to everything Rhodes has been through with John Cena and Randy Orton and argued that Rhodes has grown so used to betrayal that he now expects it from everyone.
“Okay, you’re still mad about it. That’s your ego talking. I understand. He’s paranoid. John Cena, Randy Orton, they stabbed him in the back. You’re paranoid it’s gonna happen again and again. I’m not gonna stab you in the back. This is your ego speaking,” Punk said.
Rhodes didn’t deny the ego. He joked that his purple pants made it obvious, then turned it back on Punk, insisting that the aftermath of Saturday Night’s Main Event revealed who Punk really is.
“Guess what? News flash: I’m wearing purple pants. Clearly I have an ego. But there’s so much that’s unsaid between you and me. Don’t talk to me about ego. Last night, your mask slipped. So I don’t wanna hear any of this ego bulls**t,” Rhodes said.
Punk offered one final apology for the accidental shot with the championship, then made sure what came next was no accident. He stepped forward, pie-faced Rhodes, and drew security into the ring as both men were separated.
“I’ll tell you again, last night was an accident, and I apologize. But this is on purpose,” Punk said, before shouting “That’s on purpose, little brother!”
What’s At Stake At SummerSlam
The bad blood is built entirely around the Undisputed WWE Championship. Punk enters as the reigning champion, having beaten Sami Zayn on the July 6 episode of Raw, with Rhodes positioned as his SummerSlam challenger.
The two have crossed paths in singles competition only twice on WWE television before now, both meetings back in 2008 on Raw, leaving their series tied at one apiece. That makes their SummerSlam clash their first one-on-one match on a premium live event and their first for a world title.
Rhodes and Punk previously teamed up before this feud turned personal, with the pair picking up a win at Saturday Night’s Main Event after surprise interference. That short-lived cooperation is exactly what the reported backstage argument, and now this on-screen shove, has torn apart.
SummerSlam 2026 runs as a two-night event on August 1 and 2 at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, with Punk vs. Rhodes for the Undisputed WWE Championship advertised as one of the top attractions. On this evidence, the two won’t need much help getting there.
