Tyson Kidd helped Kevin Owens.

The former Universal Champion made his surprise return from a neck injury after more than a year of inaction during the SummerSlam PPV. Both Owens and Gunther were added to the WWE title #1 contender match between Finn Balor and Sami Zayn. Kevin went on to win the match, and he is now set to face CM Punk for the title on the August 21 SmackDown from his home country of Canada.

During a recent interview with Counted Out with Mike & Tyler, Tyson Kidd discussed KO’s injury and return. Kidd, whose own career ended because of a neck injury, revealed that he talked to Kevin throughout his hiatus. Though despite working behind the scenes in the company, Tyson claimed that he didn’t know that Kevin would be making his return at SummerSlam:

I talked to Kevin a lot through the process. It was a tough process for him, obviously; he was out for 17 months, I didn’t know Kevin was wrestling that day. I found out Sunday. I heard somebody talking about a stunner, and I thought Kevin was doing something with Sami and the Finn match. I didn’t realize Gunther is being added, Kevin’s being added and coming back.

Tyson Kidd revealed that he only realized that Kevin Owens will be wrestling a match when he saw him in full gear a couple hours before the bout. He also discussed how seeing the injured star back in the ring was awesome because he never got to experience that himself:

I was in Gorilla, and then Kevin came in; and I was so excited for him. I was watching his match and just wondering what does he feel like right now? Because I experienced the one part of it where it does come to a screeching halt with your neck, but I never experienced that other side of it where you go have the match again. And so that was awesome.

The former tag team champion mentioned that he talked to Kevin on the SmackDown after SummerSlam. Tyson Kidd had expected Owens to be sore on wrestling a match after so long but Kevin said that he was feeling pretty good.
