Persephone will defend the CMLL World Women’s Championship against Kris Statlander at AEW Grand Slam Mexico. The match was confirmed on a newly released event graphic, with the show airing live Wednesday, August 5, from Arena Mexico in Mexico City on TBS and HBO Max.
The pairing grows directly out of this week’s Dynamite. Persephone challenged Maya World for the AEW TBS Championship, and the match turned late when Hikaru Shida ran in with a kendo stick to help Persephone. Statlander cut off the interference by snatching the weapon away from Persephone at ringside, and World capitalized moments later with a bridging fallaway slam to retain the title.
That moment put Statlander and Persephone on a collision course, and Grand Slam Mexico gives it a title stipulation. Persephone has held the CMLL World Women’s Championship since beating Mercedes Moné for the title on March 6 at Arena Mexico, and this will be her first defense of the belt against AEW opposition on AEW television. Statlander is a former AEW Women’s World Champion and TBS Champion, the first woman to hold both titles.
Grand Slam Mexico Card So Far
The Persephone-Statlander match joins a growing lineup for AEW’s second Grand Slam Mexico:
- AEW International Championship: Kyle Fletcher (c) vs. “Speedball” Mike Bailey
- Mark Davis vs. Will Ospreay, with the Don Callis Family barred from ringside
- Six-Man Tag Team Match: The Brawling Birds (Alex Windsor and Jamie Hayter) and Willow Nightingale vs. Divine Dominion (Lena Kross and Megan Bayne) and Mercedes Moné
- Andrade El Idolo also has a qualifier on the card for the number one spot in the Casino Gauntlet match at All In.
