Pat McAfee will be sticking around after WrestleMania.
The former NFL star is scheduled to accompany Randy Orton for his WWE title match against Cody Rhodes in the main event of WrestleMania 42 Night 1. Amid the backlash to McAfee's reveal as Orton's mystery caller, many people have been wondering if the company will keep him around after the Show of Shows.
Dave Meltzer provided some updates on the matter in the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter. He noted that the current plan is for Pat McAfee to be part of a key match at Backlash in May:
Pat McAfee will team with Randy Orton against Cody Rhodes & Jelly Roll coming out of WrestleMania and be a key match at the Backlash PPV on 5/9, at least as of plans that were confirmed by multiple people and were still in play at press time.
The 38-year-old has announced that he will leave WWE for good if The Viper fails to win the Undisputed title from Rhodes. So him being planned for Backlash suggests that Orton will most likely defeat The American Nightmare to win his 15th World title next week.
Though reports suggest that WWE is reworking the plans concerning the former Raw commentator in light of the negative reaction to his storyline reveal. This means that things could still change between now and WrestleMania.
Before that, Pat McAfee is scheduled to make an appearance on SmackDown tonight and he is promising a massive surprise for the show. You can check out more about it here.
