Brock Lesnar called himself the past. Triple H is not willing to say what that means.
Lesnar lost the trilogy finale to Oba Femi inside Hell in a Cell on Night 1 of SummerSlam, then came back out with Paul Heyman, called Femi into the ring and put him over on the microphone as the future of the company before walking to the back.
Asked at the post-show press conference whether that was a retirement, WWE’s Chief Content Officer started with the obvious.
I don’t know. You saw Brock in whatever way he retired a few months ago and then come back and do this.
Then he weighed what Lesnar actually did.
But for Brock to walk back to the ring, to bring Oba back in there with him, to put him over verbally and physically as, ‘This is the future of the business. This is the today. This is the now. This is the future, and I am the past.’ That’s a pretty bold statement. Brock doesn’t just say things.
And stopped there.
Without reading into it any more than that, ‘I am the past’ is what he said. But you know as well as I do, Brock does what Brock wants to do. So I would take what he said at face value and let’s see.
Levesque also argued Lesnar is underrated as a performer, calling him one of the best of all time psychologically and in the ring, and crediting him with building a believable style nobody else could have run.
A Pattern Of Walking Away And Coming Back
WWE has announced nothing about Lesnar’s status, and recent history is why Triple H is hedging. Lesnar appeared to retire after losing to Femi at WrestleMania 42 in April, leaving his gloves and boots in the ring.
That did not hold. He returned weeks later to attack Femi on Raw, then beat him at Clash in Italy to force the SummerSlam decider. Even during the layoff, reports indicated WWE still classified Lesnar as an active performer and free agent rather than a retiree.
One detail separates Saturday from April. This time the boots stayed on.
