Nick Aldis made his long-awaited WWE in-ring debut on Night 1 of SummerSlam 2026, and Gunther sent him home with a loss, forcing the tap with a sleeper hold in front of a roaring U.S. Bank Stadium crowd in Minneapolis.
The match marked Aldis’s first bout since 2023 and his first under WWE’s banner after years as the on-screen SmackDown General Manager. He walked to the ring to “Morning Glory” by Oasis, the same entrance music he used during his NWA run, billed once again as “The National Treasure.”
Gunther, working as the heavy favorite after recent wins over Goldberg, John Cena and AJ Styles, opened with a clean break that turned into a chop. Aldis answered by muscling him into a suplex and going for the King’s Lynn Cloverleaf, only for Gunther to escape and knock him off the top rope to the floor. Gunther spent stretches of the match taunting Aldis’s wife, Mickie James, at ringside with their son Donovan looking on.
Aldis kept firing back. He hit a superplex that drew a loud “you still got it” chant, a running powerslam, back to back flying elbows and another attempt at the Cloverleaf. Gunther broke free, countered into a suplex and a powerbomb, then locked the sleeper back in for good. Aldis tapped after roughly 11 minutes, and the crowd gave him a standing ovation as he celebrated afterward with James and Donovan in the ring.
The Buildup
The match traces back to Saturday Night’s Main Event, where Aldis, still SmackDown General Manager at the time, cost Gunther and Sami Zayn their tag match against CM Punk and Cody Rhodes. Triple H booked the singles match on the spot during the SummerSlam kickoff show, and Aldis stepped away from his GM duties to accept it.
Gunther had said days earlier that matches like this one, without a championship on the line, still carry weight for him. Speaking on the Complex Graps Wrestling Podcast, he pointed to his outings with Goldberg, Cena, AJ Styles and Pat McAfee as proof that a special occasion match can matter just as much as a title defense.

Aldis is expected to return to the SmackDown GM chair after a one-off billed as a career capstone rather than the start of a new in-ring run. For Gunther, the win keeps his post title picture momentum going as he continues to push for another run at the Undisputed WWE Championship.
