Cope & FTR Honor Asheville Spirit After AEW Dynamite

0

Cope, formerly known as Adam Copeland, delivered an emotional message to the Asheville crowd following this week’s AEW Dynamite: Fight For The Fallen. In the main event, Cope debuted his new ring name and teamed with FTR to defeat The Death Riders.

Cope With It: Times Wrestlers Had Their Names Shortened

The show doubled as a fundraiser for those affected by Hurricane Helene, which tore through Georgia, Florida, and the Carolinas in late 2024. After the show, Cope took the mic to express his pride in being an Asheville resident and praised the city’s resilience.

“I live in the 828. Here in the 828, we’re tough sons of b****es. We don’t let a hurricane keep us down, do we? No, we don’t. We pick ourselves up, we dust ourselves off, we dig out, and we all come and have a good time. I cannot say enough about this community.”

Dax Harwood, also from Asheville, reflected on how far the town has come since Hurricane Helene, as he added:

“Last time I was in this building, it was bleak. We had just about 1,000 people. But tonight, you packed it out to see Rated FTR, and we love you guys. Thank you very much

Closing the post-show segment, Cope led the crowd in a spirited “828” chant, fostering a sense of unity among those affected by Hurricane Helene. Last week, he shared that his own family had been impacted by the storm, revealing they had been without clean drinking water for months and had relied on bottled water.

The Rated-R Superstar will be in action this Saturday on Collision, when he and FTR battle the Learning Tree. No matter where his journey in wrestling takes him, however, Cope will always be grateful to those in Asheville and is proud to call the town home.

Cope With It: Times Wrestlers Had Their Names Shortened

0

On the latest episode of AEW Dynamite, Adam Copeland returned to action, but is now going by the name ‘Cope.’ The WWE Hall of Famer is just the latest wrestling star to have his name shortened, but he isn’t the only one.

Here are some times wrestlers had their names cut short, for better or worse.

The Undertaker

One of wrestling’s most iconic names, The Undertaker originally debuted as “Kane The Undertaker” during a 1990 WWF Superstars taping. By the time of his official TV debut, the “Kane” portion was dropped but would resurface seven years later for Glenn Jacobs.

GUNTHER

Before reigning as WWE’s World Heavyweight Champion, GUNTHER was known as WALTER. In early 2022, WWE rebranded him as Gunther Stark, but quickly shortened the name to avoid controversy, as “Gunther Stark” was also the name of a Nazi naval officer.

Cody

When Cody Rhodes left WWE in 2016, he competed simply as “Cody” due to WWE’s trademark on the Rhodes surname. In November 2020, “The American Nightmare” successfully reclaimed the Rhodes name, which he now proudly carries as the reigning Undisputed WWE Champion.

Sheamus

The Celtic Warrior debuted in WWE’s developmental system as Sheamus O’Shaunessy. By the time of his main roster debut on WWE ECW in 2009, the name was shortened to Sheamus. The streamlined moniker didn’t hinder his success, as he ended the year as WWE Champion after defeating John Cena.

Riddle

Originally known as Matt Riddle, WWE shortened the Original Bro’s name in 2020. According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the change was influenced by Riddle’s MMA background and his association with marijuana.

Carlito

The Judgment Day star has been wrestling as Carlito, fans may have forgotten that he debuted in 2004 as Carlito Caribbean Cool. It wasn’t long before WWE ditched two-thirds of the former U.S. Champion’s name, and Carlito has gone by one moniker ever since.

The Rock

Perhaps the most successful example of a name change, “The Rock” was born from the transition of Dwayne Johnson’s initial persona, “Rocky Maivia.” The shift not only marked a turning point in his career but also cemented his legacy. To this day, even non-wrestling fans recognize “The Rock” as a cultural icon.

Jeff Jarrett Signs Final In-Ring Contract, Sets Sights on AEW Gold

0

Jeff Jarrett made a huge announcement about his future during this week’s AEW Dynamite, the promotion’s annual Fight For The Fallen event.

In a backstage segment with his wife Karen by his side, the Jarretts spoke about this being a difficult decision, but the pair remain “unbreakable.” Transitioning to the ring, Jeff wished the fans in North Carolina a “slappy new year,” and reflected on the many highlights of his legendary career. Along the way, Jarrett acknowledged launching TNA Wrestling in 2002, though did so without naming the promotion.

Holding up his boots, Jarrett asked fans if they wanted to see him ride off into the sunset, which the audience was vehemently against. Jarrett said he isn’t ready to step away just yet either, but that he has signed his final contract as an active professional wrestler.

Jarrett shared his aspirations of capturing gold one more time, he made it clear that he isn’t aiming for a trios title. Instead, Jarrett is setting his sights on a much higher title, the AEW World Championship and declared himself for the Casino Gauntlet Match on the January 8 episode of AEW Dynamite.

Stay tuned to SEScoops for the latest on Jeff Jarrett, as the legend is preparing to say goodbye to the ring, though not before he wins some gold.

Court Dismisses Bizarre Lawsuit Against AEW and Bryan Danielson

0

Leland Owens, known for filing lawsuits against WWE and UFC has had his case against AEW and Byan Danielson officially dismissed. On December 26, the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Washington dismissed Owens’ case, the latest in a series of peculiar claims.

The lawsuit, filed on December 13, alleged “intellectual property infringement” and “theft” of ideas Owens claimed to have shared with Danielson. Owens stated he created the name “Shockwave,” which AEW trademarked as a potential show name, though such an event has yet to be confirmed. He also linked “Shockwave” to an undefined “Engage PPV or PLE” without providing any clear explanation. Owens sought either “a reasonable offer” or full rights to his alleged ideas, while also citing “emotional stress” in his complaint.

Just two weeks later, on December 27, Owens filed another lawsuit—this time against the United States Government. In this filing, Owens claimed he provided the government with film and television ideas, as well as inventions, but received no compensation. Owens named Bryan Danielson, Mercedes Moné, Vince McMahon, and Donald Trump as parties involved in this alleged wrongdoing, and again cited “emotional stress” and demanded”reasonable payments” and recognition.

Bryan Danielson: “It’s 50/50 If I’ll Ever Wrestle Again”

Now, both of these cases have been dismissed, with the court citing Owens’ failure to establish federal jurisdiction. However, the dismissal was without prejudice, leaving open the possibility for Owens to revisit the matter in the future.

This isn’t the first time Owens has taken aim at the wrestling world. In a previous lawsuit against WWE, he accused Stephanie McMahon of making disparaging remarks about his daughter, allegedly leading to a hush-money offer. He has also claimed that Danielson and Mone, during their time in WWE, were involved in misusing his intellectual property. Neither of these suits saw him receive a penny from WWE.

Adam Copeland Reveals Shorten Name, Works First Match In Several Months

0

During Wednesday’s episode of AEW Dynamite, FTR (Dax Harwood and Cash Wheeler) joined forces with Adam Copeland, now known “Cope,” to take on The Death Riders (Jon Moxley, Wheeler Yuta, and Claudio Castagnoli) in a heated trios match. The bout took place in FTR’s hometown of Asheville, North Carolina, adding an extra layer of intensity to the showdown.

Jay White got involved by attacking Yuta. The babyfaces hit their finishers to end the match.

This rivalry stems from an attack on FTR by The Death Riders during the December 14th episode of Collision. While FTR confirmed they would be medically cleared to wrestle at Fight for the Fallen on January 1, they hinted that they wouldn’t be entering the match alone. That prediction came true when Copeland made his shocking return at the Worlds End pay-per-view.

At Worlds End, Copeland returned from injury in dramatic fashion, attacking Jon Moxley after he retained the AEW World Heavyweight Championship in a fatal 4-way match. Joined by FTR, Copeland’s post-match ambush on The Death Riders set the stage for this week’s trios match.

Copeland had been sidelined due to injury but remained active during his recovery, even working on a film project. He was medically cleared for in-ring action several weeks ago, making his return to AEW programming at the perfect moment to assist FTR.

With tensions escalating between these factions, the clash on Dynamite was another step in what promises to be an explosive rivalry heading into 2025.

Ricochet Turns Heel, Brutally Attacks Swerve Strickland With Scissors

0

Ricochet cemented his heel turn in dramatic fashion on AEW Dynamite, intervening violently during a triple threat match between Swerve Strickland, Roderick Strong, and Jay White. Emerging through the crowd, Ricochet shockingly struck Strickland in the head with golden scissors, setting the stage for White to secure victory over Strong with his finisher. As a result of the win, White earned the coveted #1 spot in next week’s Casino Battle Royale.

The aftermath was even more shocking. A bloodied Strickland crawled around ringside as Ricochet, clad in a suit and glasses, stared him down coldly. Ricochet dragged Strickland into the ring and continued his vicious assault until members of the Undisputed Kingdom stormed in to chase him off.

This heated moment followed the events of the AEW Worlds End pay-per-view, where Ricochet faced Kazuchika Okada in the Continental Classic League Semifinal. After Okada defeated Ricochet, Strickland appeared on the stage to taunt him. Strickland mocked Ricochet’s confidence, claiming he would “blow it” and that he was all talk since joining AEW. Escalating the insult, Strickland handed out toilet paper to fans, calling it the “best way to clean up a mess.”

The tension between Ricochet and Strickland has now exploded into outright hostility, leaving AEW fans eager to see what’s next for the bitter rivals.

Kenny Omega’s AEW Dynamite Return Date Announced

0

Kenny Omega is officially returning to AEW as a permanent roster member on next week’s episode of AEW Dynamite. The announcement came via a video package aired during this week’s show, confirming Omega’s comeback after a prolonged absence.

Omega made a dramatic return at the Worlds End pay-per-view, following the Kazuchika Okada vs. Will Ospreay Championship Finals for the AEW Continental Championship. After the match, Christopher Daniels took the mic, revealing that he was stepping down as an EVP and introducing Omega as his successor. In a symbolic moment, Omega presented Okada with the Continental Title, marking his return to AEW programming.

Omega’s first match back will take place at Wrestle Dynasty, a multi-promotional event at the Tokyo Dome on January 5th, where he is scheduled to face Gabe Kidd. This bout will mark his first in-ring action since December 2023.

Omega had been sidelined for much of the year due to a combination of health issues, including a bout with diverticulitis that required surgery in May. Although he briefly appeared on AEW television that same month, an ambush by a reformed version of The Elite postponed his full-time return even further.

With Omega now back and cleared for action, fans can look forward to the next chapter in his storied AEW career.

Julia Hart Returns To In-Ring Action On AEW Dynamite

0

Julia Hart is back in action after spending the majority of 2024 away from the ring. A key figure in AEW’s women’s division, Hart was sidelined following her April 2024 loss to Willow Nightingale at AEW Dynasty, where she dropped the AEW TBS Championship.

Speculation about Hart’s return began months ago when her House of Black stablemate, Brody King, teased that fans might see her back soon. By November, rumors intensified, with reports indicating Hart was expected to return in the near future. AEW further fueled anticipation by airing vignettes building up to her comeback.

Hart made her official return on the December 14th episode of Collision by attacking Jamie Hayter. On this week’s Dynamite, Hart stepped back into the ring, facing Hayter in her first match since April. Hayter went over after distracting the referee with an arrow to spit black mist in the eyes of Hater.

Hart’s re-emergence adds depth to AEW’s women’s roster as she seeks to reclaim her momentum following her championship reign and subsequent hiatus. With her in-ring return now underway, fans are eager to see what’s next for the former TBS Champion.

Wrestling Legend Sweet Daddy Siki Passes Away At 91

0

Legendary trailblazer Sweet Daddy Siki has passed away at the age of 91 following a long battle with dementia.

Siki made his name greatly known as a big personality and talent, wrestling all over North America before becoming notorious for training the likes of Adam Copeland and Christian Cage.

He became one of the first big African-American heels and leaned into that role as he and promotions pushed the envelope.

Siki, real name Elkin James, infamously took on “Nature Boy” Buddy Rogers in Greensboro, NC, which according to Siki had the Klu Klux Klan picketing outside the Greensboro Coliseum. Siki also felt the wrath of promoters due to his interracial marriage. Siki also worked a great deal for Stu Hart up in Calgary for Stampede Wrestling.

WWE took to social media to pay tribute to Siki, stating “WWE is saddened to learn that Elkin James, known to wrestling fans as Sweet Daddy Siki, passed away on December 31, 2024, at age 91. WWE extends its condolences to Siki’s family, friends and fans.”

AEW also commented on the passing of James.

AEW and the wrestling world mourn the passing of Sweet Daddy Siki.

After his in ring career came to a close, he became a trainer to many pro wrestling hopefuls including Adam Copeland and Christian Cage.

Our thoughts are with his family, his friends and his fans.

We at SEScoops want to send our thoughts, prayers and condolences to the family, friends and fans of Sweet Daddy Siki.

WWE Superstars Reveal Their Wrestling Goals For 2025

0

2025 is upon us and for many, this is a time to set resolutions and goals for the new year. With 12 months ahead, the Superstars of WWE have revealed what goals they have in mind, both in and out of the ring, for the new year.

Liv Morgan, fresh off a stellar 2024, has set her sights high. The Judgment Day star plans to solidify her legacy as “the greatest Women’s World Champion of all time” and aims to capture the Women’s Tag Team Titles alongside Raquel Rodriguez. On a personal note, Morgan shared her intention to “flourish my perfect relationship with Daddy Dom.”

CM Punk is determined to prove why he’s known as the “Best in the World” by winning the 2025 Men’s Royal Rumble and securing “all the titles.” Outside the ring, Punk promises to ensure The New Day continues using the janitor’s closet as their dressing room. He also declared his intent to shave Dominik Mysterio’s mustache.

Dominik Mysterio has a different kind of aspiration: to be less “misunderstood and hated.” According to Mysterio, he sees himself as a “cool guy,” and hopes 2025 will be the year fans start to agree.

For The New Day, 2025 represents a chance to reclaim their glory as champions and plan on holding gold once more now they’ve ditched Big E. The group hasn’t held tag titles since April 2021 and looks to end that drought in the coming months.

Kevin Owens‘ 2025 goal is to remind fans that he is the “true, rightful WWE Champion.” Owens plans to hold onto the title for the next decade and will have the chance to prove he’s worthy to be champion at next month’s Royal Rumble.

Gabe Kidd Contract Update

0

New Japan Pro Wrestling star Gabe Kidd could soon become a free agent and depart the promotion.

NJPW Strong Openweight Champion Gabe Kidd’s contract is expiring soon, according to Fightful. However, the exact timeline has not been shared. It is unclear whether the negotiation process has started between the two parties. However, the outlet reported that Kidd is expected to be retained by NJPW.

Kidd is set to face Kenny Omega at AEW Wrestle Dynasty following his return at AEW Worlds End pay-per-view. The pair got into a backstage altercation back in November after Omega announced his return after a year-long battle with diverticulitis.

During NJPW Power StruggleKenny Omega opened up on his recovery from diverticulitis and stated that he’d love to make an in-ring comeback at Wrestle Dynasty on January 5th. He had also expressed his desire to square off against one of the young talents from NJPW at the event.

However, chaos ensued when Omega got backstage as he came across Gabe Kidd. The reigning NJPW Strong Openweight Champion took some shots at him and a massive brawl broke out between the two.

Gabe Kidd’s future with NJPW might be up in the air but doesn’t mean he will be heading to AEW. Kidd previously made it clear that he was not interested in joining Tony Khan’s promotion. Kidd had expressed his frustration over AEW in an interview where he said he not only doesn’t plan to join AEW. He further said that he’s not happy with the relationship between NJPW and AEW.

Kevin Nash: The Kliq Wasn’t A Faction, We Were..

0

WWE Hall of Famer Kevin Nash recently shared his thoughts on The Kliq and explained why it wasn’t an on-screen faction.

The Kliq remains to be one of the most infamous backstage groups in wrestling history. Back in the 90s, Triple H, Kevin Nash, Shawn Michaels, Scott Hall and Sean Waltman formed the group and were known for allegedly using their backstage influence to succeed in WWE. However, the group never competed inside the ring. Nash and Hall became a successful tag team, while Michaels and Triple H also tasted success. However, they did not wrestle as a stable.

Speaking on his Kliq This podcast, Kevin Nash was asked whether he would consider The Kliq a faction. Here is what he explained:

“We never wrestled together. It was a backstage political group. I’d say we were a bunch of cutthroat mother****ers that held a lot of people back. See, I said that with a straight face, and people will buy that. ‘He even said it.’

No, it was five guys that loved the business and had very like psychology, and if you didn’t, we’d beat it into you.”

In November last year, Kevin Nash canceled a couple of Meet & Greet appearances for MCW Pro Wrestling. The Maryland-based indie wrestling promotion shared a message from Nash on social media. Nash had revealed that he was dealing with herniated discs in his back. He further said that he had been in therapy and working with doctors.

WWE Royal Rumble 2025 Match Card Predictions: Title matches and more

0

The WWE Royal Rumble 2025 is set to kick off the Road to WrestleMania 41 in spectacular fashion on Saturday, February 1, 2025, at the Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana.

This historic event marks the first time the Royal Rumble will take place outside of January, promising an action-packed night filled with surprises, high-stakes drama, and unforgettable moments. As anticipation builds, let’s dive into the predicted match card for this monumental event.

Men’s and Women’s Royal Rumble Matches

As always, the cornerstone of the event will be the 30-man and 30-woman Royal Rumble matches, so this is hardly really much of a prediction.

While the full list of participants is yet to be announced, fans can expect a mix of current superstars, returning legends, and possibly a few surprises.

In the men’s match, keep an eye out for potential returnees like Big E, who COULD (while unlikely) make a long-awaited comeback to solidify his position as a top WWE face. For the women’s match, speculation is rife about the possible return of Charlotte Flair, which could dramatically increase her chances of winning.

Undisputed WWE Championship: Cody Rhodes vs. Kevin Owens (Ladder Match)

This has now been confirmed, and it is one of the most anticipated matches of the night. Cody Rhodes will defend his Undisputed WWE Championship against Kevin Owens in a high-stakes Ladder Match.

This match was set up following a series of intense confrontations between the two superstars, including a vicious attack by Owens on Rhodes after their clash at Saturday Night’s Main Event.

The stipulation adds an extra layer of excitement, as both the Undisputed Title and the Winged Eagle Championship will be suspended above the ring.

World Heavyweight Championship: Finn Bálor vs. Gunther

While not officially confirmed, there’s strong speculation that Finn Bálor could challenge Gunther for the World Heavyweight Championship.

This potential clash of styles between the high-flying Bálor and the hard-hitting Gunther could be a show-stealer, offering a different pace from the other matches on the card.

Women’s World Championship: Rhea Ripley vs. Liv Morgan

Rhea Ripley has been dominating the women’s division, and her getting another shot at Liv Morgan at the Royal Rumble seems likely.

There’s a good chance that Ripley will be screwed again here with the two finally meeting for the last time at WrestleMania later in the year.

United States Championship: LA Knight vs. Shinsuke Nakamura

The United States Championship could be on the line in a match between LA Knight and Shinsuke Nakamura.

Both superstars have been making waves on their respective brands, and a title match at the Royal Rumble could elevate the prestige of the championship further.

Road to WrestleMania Implications

The outcomes of these matches will have significant implications for WrestleMania 41. The winners of the Royal Rumble matches will secure their spots in high-profile championship matches at WWE’s flagship event. Additionally, the results of the title matches could reshape the landscape of WWE heading into the biggest show of the year.

As we approach the event, more matches and participants are likely to be announced. The WWE Royal Rumble 2025 is shaping up to be an unmissable event for wrestling fans worldwide. With its move to Netflix for international markets, this year’s Royal Rumble will reach an even broader audience, potentially ushering in a new era for WWE’s global presence.

Jack Morris & WWE’s Omos Win GHC Tag Titles At NOAH New Year 2025

0

WWE Superstar Omos has kicked 2025 off to a strong start by becoming one-half of the GHC Tag Team Champions. At Pro Wrestling NOAH’s New Year 2025 event, Omos teamed with Jack Morris to end the reign of Naomichi Marufuji and Takashi Sugiura. The new champions were joined by former WWE Superstar Yoshi Tatsu.

This match marked Omos’ in-ring debut for NOAH, who last competed in WWE during the April 5, 2024, edition of SmackDown as part of the Andre the Giant Battle Royal.

After the match, Morris and Omos celebrated their win, with the duo declaring that they would hold the titles forever.

Omos’ involvement with NOAH is the latest example of WWE being willing to work with other promotions. In 2024 alone, WWE partnered with NOAH, Josh Barnett’s Bloodsport, Marigold, and TNA Wrestling. However, Omos is the first WWE Superstar to win a non-WWE championship since the Sports Entertainment juggernaut began working with other promotions.

Stay tuned to SEScoops for the latest on Omos, now that the Nigerian Giant has the GHC Tag Team Championships in his colossal clutches.

Triple H & McMahons Ring In 2025 At Donald Trump’s Mar-A-Lago Resort

0

WWE CCO Paul ‘Triple H’ Levesque and members of the McMahon family celebrated the arrival of 2025 with Donald Trump at Mar-A-Lago. On X, Andrew Guliana, son of former New York City mayor Rudy Guliani, shared a photo with the Game.

Levesque didn’t attend the festivities alone, as Stephanie McMahon and Linda McMahon also attended. The elder McMahon has been touted by President-Elect Trump to lead the Department of Education despite no history in teaching. In 2010, McMahon stepped down from Connecticut’s Board of Education, and it was reported days later that she had falsely claimed her bachelors degree was in education (it is in French.)

image

The President-Elect and his wife Melania were also seen celebrating at Mar-A-Lago, though it’s unclear if Vince McMahon joined his daughter and son-in-law in Florida. The 79-year-old former Chairman of WWE is a known friend of Trump and is currently facing Janel Grant’s lawsuit alleging sexual trafficking.

Wrestling with Politics: How Donald Trump Brought WWE to the White House

While Triple H and the McMahons were spotted at Mar-A-Lago, WWE opts not to reference Trump on TV, despite his status as a WWE Hall of Famer. Given the ongoing toxic nature of politics, the Sports Entertainment juggernaut opts to avoid the topic altogether, despite Trump’s recent victory and McMahon’s apparent appointment in his cabinet.

Joe Hendry Teased For WWE Raw’s Debut On Netflix

0

Joe Hendry had a huge 2024, both in TNA Wrestling and WWE NXT, but could fans be seeing the viral star on Monday Night Raw very soon?

During this week’s episode of WWE NXT, Hendry made a cameo appearance to accept the award for “Moment of the Year.” The TNA star graciously acknowledged the honor and playfully reminded fans that his catchphrase “Say his name and he appears” means “anywhere, any time, any show.” Immediately after, WWE teased Raw’s highly anticipated debut on Netflix, fueling speculation that Hendry might make a surprise appearance on the January 6 episode.

Hendry appearing would certainly be a highlight of what is gearing up to be one of the biggest episodes of Monday Night Raw in history. Current plans for the show include:

  • Main Event: CM Punk vs. Seth Rollins
  • Tribal Combat: Roman Reigns vs. Solo Sikoa
  • Last Woman Standing for the Women’s World Championship: Liv Morgan (c) vs. Rhea Ripley
  • Singles Match: Jey Uso vs. Drew McIntyre
  • John Cena’s Retirement Tour Begins
  • Music Performance: Travis Scott, the creator of Raw’s new theme song, will be live.

Whether Hendry is on WWE Raw or not, January 2025 will be a massive month for the Scottish star. At TNA Genesis on January 19, Hendry will challenge Nic Nemeth for the TNA World Championship. Hendry has come up short twice before with the title on the line, first at Slammiversary and later at Bound for Glory thanks to the interference on John Layfield.

Stay tuned to SEScoops for the latest on Joe Hendry, and whether the popular star does appear on Raw’s Netflix debut as teased.

0

2024 was a monumental year for the world of professional wrestling, from the WWE exit of Vince McMahon to huge signings in AEW. With 2024 officially at an end, many in the world of wrestling are looking back at the year that was.

NXT Superstar Arianna Grace ended 2024 with a party of her own, and hopes that 2025 proves to be as beautiful as the Beauty Pagent queen.

Several wrestlers also shared their plans for 2025, including ‘Big’ Bronson Reed, who had some choice verbiage on X.

Victoria Eyes WWE 2K Role After Homecoming Under Legends Deal

WWE legend Victoria, a key woman in the Ruthless Aggression Era, has officially reconnected with the company by signing a Legends deal. This week, the former WWE Women’s Champion shared her excitement over the deal during live signing on Whatnot.

“I was so excited about getting the Nostalgic Legends contract… That [WWE] is my home, and I’m just very proud to be a part of the company still.”

A WWE Legends deal allows for WWE to produce new merchandise for those who sign, as well as use them in video games. During the stream, Victoria shared that “I’ll be in the WWE games,” introducing a new generation of fans to the veteran. Her last appearance in a WWE game was in Smackdown vs. Raw 2009, released in 2008.

Though there are obvious perks to her role as a WWE Legends deal signee, Victoria doesn’t want to take advantage of her new role. When asked, Victoria made clear she doesn’t expect any freebies, even with WWE coming to her home town on San Diego for SmackDown on January 17.

“I don’t ask for free tickets. I think someone said, ‘Do you get free tickets for WrestleMania?’ I go, ‘Absolutely not. Are you kidding me? I wouldn’t even ask. I’d be embarrassed.’”

Victoria last competed for WWE in the 2021 Women’s Royal Rumble match, which was ultimately won by Bianca Belair. With this new deal to her name, fans shouldn’t count a return from the legendary wrestler, which could spell disaster for WWE’s current women’s roster.

OVW’s Class of 2002

Victoria (Lisa Maria Varon) was part of the legendary Ohio Valley Wrestling Class of 2002, widely considered to be the most successful WWE developmental class in history.

This iconic group of raw potential went on to become some of the biggest stars in professional wrestling, dominating the industry for generations to come.

The core members of the class included a few names you’ve probably heard of: John Cena, Randy Orton, Batista (Dave Bautista), Brock Lesnar, Shelton Benjamin and Victoria (Lisa Marie Varon).

A Potential Glimpse into WWE’s Future: The Independent Scene’s Role in 2025

As WWE navigates its 2025 free-agent landscape, the company’s ability to scout and secure fresh talent from the independent wrestling scene remains critical. While the big names of current WWE superstars dominate headlines, several rising stars from the independent circuit could potentially reshape the roster’s future.

Here’s a look at some noteworthy independent wrestlers poised to make waves in the coming years:

Megan Bayne

Ranked an impressive 139 in the 2024 PWI 500, Megan Bayne is redefining what it means to be a versatile, dominant performer. Known for her strength and ability to compete in intergender matches, Bayne has built a reputation by defeating prominent opponents like Joey Janela and Alec Price.

Her unique blend of power, charisma, and versatility makes her a compelling candidate for WWE, where her talent could shine across both the women’s and men’s divisions.

Alec Price

Breaking into the top 100 of the PWI 500 at 92, Alec Price has emerged as a technical marvel in the indie scene. Known for his adaptability and fierce in-ring style, Price has already made a name for himself against opponents like Jonathan Gresham and Mustafa Ali.

His charisma and in-ring storytelling would make him a fantastic addition to WWE’s roster, especially in programs requiring high-energy, technical matches.

Richard Holliday

One of the most talked-about heels in the indie circuit, Richard Holliday ranks at 215 but brings a character-driven approach that resonates deeply with audiences.

His recovery from Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in 2023 further exemplifies his determination and love for wrestling. Holliday’s flair for trash talk and ability to seamlessly play the villain make him a natural fit for WWE’s entertainment-focused brand, drawing comparisons to stars like The Miz and MJF.

Zilla Fatu

The son of Umaga, Zilla Fatu, has emerged as a standout with just 33 matches in 2024. His natural charisma, in-ring presence, and heritage make him a compelling addition to any major wrestling promotion. As he transitions from Game Changer Wrestling and builds a wider profile, Fatu is a prime candidate for WWE’s developmental system.

Calvin Tankman

With his imposing 350-pound frame and agility, Calvin Tankman has made waves across promotions like Deadlock Pro and West Coast Pro Wrestling. At 29 years old, Tankman combines experience with untapped potential, making him a valuable asset for any roster.

Titus Alexander

Jordan Oliver

Recovering from an ACL injury in 2024, Jordan Oliver has a promising career ahead as he returns to the ring. With a history in MLW and an exciting tag team career with Nick Wayne, Oliver could shine as either a solo or tag competitor in WWE.

Blake Christian

Having previously held a contract with WWE’s NXT, Blake Christian has since excelled on the independent scene. His year-long GCW World Title reign and matches against top talent like Will Ospreay have solidified his reputation as a main-event-caliber performer.

Viva Van

A unique presence on the indie circuit, Viva Van blends athleticism with a magnetic persona. Her work across promotions like GCW has cemented her as one of the most exciting female talents in recent memory.

Sam Holloway

At 6’9” and 264 pounds, Sam Holloway has a commanding presence that evokes comparisons to WWE’s Creed Brothers. With 59 matches in 2024, he’s shown potential as a future powerhouse in professional wrestling.

Why WWE Should Invest in Independent Talent

While marquee signings and contract renewals dominate WWE’s 2025 free-agent strategy, nurturing independent talent like Bayne, Mathers, Price, and Holliday offers a sustainable path for long-term success. Each brings a unique skill set and untapped potential, ensuring that WWE’s roster remains dynamic and diverse for years to come.

By keeping an eye on the independent scene and integrating fresh faces into its developmental and main roster programs, WWE can solidify its reputation as the premier destination for wrestling talent.
