Why AEW Prioritizes Larger Arenas Over Smaller, More Intimate Venues

0

Since launching in 2019, AEW has proven to be the most direct competition WWE has seen since the demise of World Championship Wrestling. Like WWE, AEW hosts its events in large venues across North America, but that has led to an issue for Tony Khan’s promotion in recent years.

Critics of AEW have often shared photos online of shows with throngs of empty seats to hit out at Tony Khan’s creative direction and the company’s overall product. Despite these unflattering images, AEW has no plans to move to smaller venues.

AEW chooses not to scale down to smaller venues for a number of reasons, Fightful Select reports. The promotion prioritizes factors like venue amenities, accessibility, parking availability, and the flexibility to expand seating as needed. They also consider the effectiveness of mailing lists and the adequacy of concession staff when choosing event locations.

While some feel that a move to smaller, more intimate venues would benefit AEW, Tony Khan will run his company in the manner he feels is best, which right now means closely prioritizing these factors when choosing its venues to host events. Stay tuned to SEScoops for the latest on All Elite Wrestling as the promotion continues to provide an alternative to WWE each and every week on TV.

Swerve Strickland Reveals How Shawn Michaels Influenced His Current Success

0

Swerve Strickland has revealed the role Shawn Michaels played in his current success.

The former AEW Champion recently appeared on Breakfast Club Power 105.1 FM. He talked about things such as negative reactions to his high-paying contract and more.

During the interview, he was also asked about the influence HBK was for him. Strickland said that Michaels was a huge influence on him and revealed that they keep in touch even now. The former NXT star then told a story about the time he felt stuck in NXT:

“He was the influence on when I really took off in my WWE NXT era because I was just stuck, hitting this wall over and over again weekly. I was having these conversations with Triple H; I was getting this runaround. I wasn’t really getting anywhere.

Then I got a promotion one day, and I was just not happy about it. I was like ‘I don’t feel like I earned the promotion, I feel like you just paying me to keep me here rather than paying what I’ve earned,’

So I spoke out about it. I was like ‘I want to be learning under Shawn.’ He was like, ‘Well, yada yada yada,’ Matt Bloom was like saying ‘yada yada yada whatever. But his office is over there.’ I’m like, ‘Oh, bet.’ I walked over to Shawn and said, ‘Hey, can we do tape study?'”

‘That’s All I’ve Got To Do?’: Swerve Strickland

Swerve Strickland mentioned that he took the leap because he had nothing to lose. He explained that Michaels approached the whole thing with an open mind and then helped him understand what the office wanted from him:

“I was like, ‘Shawn, can I watch tape with you sometime? Like an hour, something like that.’ He’s like, ‘Give me three matches, email them to me, and I’ll pick one. We can watch it on Tuesday.’ Sure enough, he lived up to his word. We watched a match of me on the Indies from like four years ago. He’s like, ‘I want to see the reason you got here. What’s the reason that we signed you to this contract to be here? I want to watch that.’ So we watched this stuff, and he like, he’s quiet, just watching.

Guys like that, they’re not gonna [go] ‘ooh, hah hah hah’; No, they’re just gonna watch. William Regal was very much like that too. The match was over, and he stopped. He’s like, ‘I know exactly the kind of performer you are now. Now I know who you are, now I know what you can offer.’ Next thing you know, he’s in meetings talking about TV the night before, and he’s texting me, he’s like ‘Okay, they want to see you get a little more aggressive and stuff like that. So bring it next match.’ I’m like, ‘That’s it? That’s all I’ve got to do?’

Next match, beating the hell out of me and Bronson Reed going back and forth. He comes to me in the back, and it’s like a football coach after the match. He’s like smacking my ass and [going], ‘That’s what I’m talking about. There you go.’ So I was like, ‘Yeah, I got that from Shawn.’ Next thing you know, North American Championship match happened. Next thing you know TV, I’m getting the microphone to talk now live. I get to show my personality more.”

The AEW star noted that these chances helped him stand out among other recruits. He started taking more and more risks after that and started getting much more comfortable in front of the camera. It got him ready for the bigger opportunities that came his way and made him the star he is now.

Liv Morgan – I’m Sad That TKO Is Cutting Back On WWE Live Events

0

As the reigning WWE Women’s World Champion, Liv Morgan is one of the most featured stars on TV and is regularly afforded screen time on Monday Night Raw. Liv can also be found at WWE’s live events but is far from happy about TKO’s reported plans to reduce the number of these untelevised shows.

TKO President Mark Shapiro told those at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia & Technology Conference this month that WWE will be cutting down on the number of its “low-margin marginally profitable, untelevised events,” and predicts that just 200 events will happen next year, compared to over 300 in 2022. Speaking to the New York Post, Morgan shared her disappointment over the news.

“I’m sad to see them kind of go a little bit because the house shows are so much fun and it’s so so much more intimate. House shows are truly for the love of the game.”

Morgan added that it was at untelevised events in 2017, 18, and 19 that she truly came into her own as an in-ring talent, something that younger stars won’t have the same opportunity to do moving forward.

“I’m sad to see that go for the newer guys and girls coming in who aren’t going to be able to have that experience and have that reps at live events under that belt but it is what is. Time home is always nice.”

While WWE live events have been a staple for decades, TKO is focusing on its profit margin and believes live events aren’t just profitable enough. While live events will remain a fixture going forward, it may prove increasingly unlikely that WWE will roll up in your hometown.

As for Liv Morgan, her next major match will be broadcast and come at WWE Bad Blood where she’ll face Rhea Ripley with the Women’s World Championship on the line. Dominik Mysterio will be suspended above the ring in a shark cage, theoretically keeping him from interfering despite an alleged fear of heights. Stay tuned to SEScoops for the latest on Liv Morgan and her ongoing ‘revenge tour’ in WWE.

WWE NXT’s Debut On The CW Listed As Rated TV-14

0

This Tuesday, October 1, WWE NXT will make its long-awaited debut on The CW after a five-year tenure as part of the USA Network. Expectations are high for the gold brand as it embarks on this new chapter, and fans can look forward to content rated TV-14, according to The CW’s official listings.

image 26

In 2022, it was reported that WWE would be moving Monday Night RAW from PG to a TV-14 rating, a decision said to have been made by the USA Network. Shortly after though, it was clarified that WWE had decided not to change Raw’s rating with the decision being down to not wanting to cause any issues with the show’s advertising partners.

TV-14 shows contain material parents may find unsuitable for children under the age of 14. The FCC’s official warning is that “parents are cautioned to exercise some care in monitoring this program and are cautioned against letting children under the age of 14 watch unattended.” These materials may range from suggestive dialogue, profanity, sexual situations or intense violence.

Arthur Morgan Actor From “Red Dead Redemption” Delivers A Stone Cold Stunner

0

The pro wrestling world has been called the “Wild West” on several occassions, but an actual crossover occurred between Steve Austin and Red Dead Redemption actor, Roger Clark.

Clark is notoriously known for portraying the notorious “Arthur Morgan” in Red Dead Redemption 2. Morgan is the protagonist of the series’ second game as players would take him on a journey across the fictional American west that Rockstar Games had created. Morgan’s story has similar ties to the odyssey of Steve Austin, who had his fair share of allies, adversaries and barroom brawls.

However, this past year it Clark who stepped foot in the wrestling ring in very surreal fashion and footage has surfaced of the cowboy getting physical.

Earlier this year, Clark was a participant in a Fantasy Super Cosplay Wrestling event at Animate Raliegh and happened to restore order in a wrestling match featuring the evil Skeletor from Masters Of The Universe. That particular evening Clark was the “Acting Sheriff” for FSCW and made sure Skeletor’s chicanery wasn’t going to effect the outcome of the match. Skeletor threw salt in the eyes of his cowboy opponent which prompted Clark to step in and deliver a Stone Cold Stunner to the character’s signature skull.

FSCW describes itself as:

“The premier combat spectacle with combatants from all over the Multiverse. Be amazed by titanic clashes as heroes and villains from Comic Books, Anime, Video Games, and TV do battle LIVE in front of your very eyes. Watch Skeletor, Spider-Man, Deadpool, Mystique, The Mario Brothers, Roadhog & Junk Rat, Storm, Loki, Kratos, Mileena, Dovahkiin, Harley Quinn, and more as they get ready for the Main Event!”

Along with the clip featured above, the FSCW YouTube channel features severals mutliverse characters including Scorpion taking on Deadpool and The Toxic Avenger in a triple threat, Black Panther vs. Loki and more.

TNA Cancels Upcoming Tapings Due To Hurricane Helene

0

TNA has made the executive decision to cancel their upcoming tapings in Spartansburg, SC due to the impact of Hurricane Helene. The company has gone full force in promoting the weekend having The Hardy Boyz doing media rounds this week, but the company released a statement notifying fans that the tapings will not happen.

Due to the catastrophic effects of Hurricane Helene, TNA Wrestling is canceling both shows scheduled for Spartanburg, S.C.

The safety and well-being of our TNA wrestlers, staff, crew and fans are top priority.

TNA will provide an update on refunds for the Spartanburg shows, as well as an update on future/additional shows.

We wish the best to everyone impacted by Hurricane Helene.

TNA joins MLW as the latest promotion to cancel their upcoming weekend events. MLW announced Friday afternoon that they’d not be putting on their show in St. Petersburg, FL on October 4.

Fightful Select has further details on TNA’s cancellation and a potential audible for what they may do regarding their future tapings. The plan for the company was to tape Friday through Tuesday, but TNA crew members who were already on site were experiencing power issues at their hotel. There were several lack of vacancies in the Spartanburg area and many crew members had to charge phones from their car.

TNA is trying to build for their Bound For Glory PPV, and some discussions involve possibly taping at Skyway Studios in Nashville, TN, the same place where they taped during the pandemic. As for what may air this week, the gameplan may involve a “Best Of Bound For Glory” episode.

Several wrestlers expressed their disappointment in not being able to participate in their tapings, including Joe Hendry, Tasha Steelz, AJ Francis and South Carolina’s own Jon Skyler.

Thunder Rosa Furious Over ‘Lies’ About Her Health

0

AEW star Thunder Rosa is furious over misleading reports about her health.

The former Women’s Champion took to Twitter recently, responding to a report from Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer Newsletter saying that she was cleared to compete.

The female star claimed that the information was absolutely wrong. Rosa also addressed her status in a new video on Instagram, saying that she will take the time to announce any changes in her status:

“I just wanna make something very clear. I just got a note from the dirt sheets that I’ve been cleared to wrestle. No I am not cleared. I was following the [Concussion] protocol this Wednesday and I’m not cleared to wrestle.

So if you’re a dirt sheet writer, anyone, ask me about my health directly. Cause I am not cleared to wrestle. When I am cleared, when my doctors tell me I can wrestle, I will personally announce it. Stop putting things that are not right.”

Thunder Rosa’s Recent Troubles

Thunder Rosa has been out of action since the August 31 episode of AEW Collision. She competed in a TBS Championship #1 contenders match at the show. The bout won by Hikaru Shida also featured Queen Aminata, and Serena Deeb.

After a couple weeks of unannounced absence, Rosa revealed on Busted Open that she had actually been put on the shelf after suffering a concussion.

This was another setback for the female star who spent most of the 2023 on shelf due to back issues. She returned to action in December 2023 but has only wrestled about 20 matches since her comeback.

The concussion protocol makes it hard to determine how long the Mexican star will remain out of action or when she could return to AEW. Stay tuned to SEScoops for any updates on her status.

Jeff Hardy Provides Update On His Mental Health

0

The last few years have been trying for Jeff Hardy but his mental health has improved tremendously after quitting drugs and alcohol.

The Hardy Boyz were guests on Busted Open Radio, sitting down with fellow legends Bully Ray and Tommy Dreamer. They talked about things such as their AEW run, working in TNA, where they want to retire and more.

Jeff was asked about his mental health and how his current state is different than other times when he’s felt that he was in a good place. Hardy revealed that he is feeling like he felt during his childhood:

“Oh, clear-minded. To be a sober, innovative Jeff Hardy, I mean, it just…it’s almost childlike, the feeling of how it felt before I ever gave into drugs or alcohol. We were obsessed with pro wrestling. That was it.

That’s what, that was our main concern. That obsession became our dream that came true as pro wrestlers. So I feel like I’m back there in an older body. I think a lot more with my heart now, instead of my mind. I try my best not to let my mind play tricks on me.”

It’s Like A High of Some Kind: Jeff Hardy

Jeff Hardy also revealed his new obsession that is helping him stay off drugs and alcohol – ice baths. He takes one every morning and according to the former world champion, it’s almost like a high of its own:

“The ice baths have been helping incredibly. I’m totally addicted to ice baths now, instead of alcohol or drugs and I love it. The first time I went underwater in an ice bath, I said, ‘Whoa, there’s something.’

It was the strangest thing ‘Whoa, there’s something to this.’ It was almost like a high of some kind. Every morning I’m in the ice bath, and that’s the biggest difference is just a clean and sober Jeff Hardy. Shoot, the moon, the sky, the stars are the limit.”

The Charismatic Enigma made a surprise TNA appearance at the Against All Odds event in June. He reunited with his brother Matt Hardy at the show and the legendary tag team has been on an exciting run in the promotion ever since.

Swerve Strickland Seemingly Confirms AEW’s Fox Deal

0

AEW star Swerve Strickland has seemingly confirmed that Tony Khan’s promotion will be producing a show for Fox Network soon.

Youtuber Trevor “Queenzflip” Robinson recently published a video about his visit to Sneakcon in Coney Island, Brooklyn. The convention took place on 21 and 22 September at the Maimonides Park stadium.

Robinson ran into the former AEW Champion during his trip. Strickland first educated him about all the work he has been doing with the wrestling promotion, including him becoming the first African American world champion of the company.

During the talk, the AEW star mentioned how SmackDown has moved from Fox to USA Network and claimed that they’re taking Fox after that:

“We about to get on Fox. Cause SmackDown’s leaving Fox. And then we’re taking Fox. TNT, TBS, and Fox, we got all three of them. Tony Khan lets me do whatever I want.”

AEW’s New TV Deals

The new TV deals of AEW will be a historic event not only for Tony Khan but for the whole sports entertainment world. Reports suggest that the company will be getting around $170 million a year for producing two shows a week for various Warner Bros Discovery platforms.

Unlike their current agreement, however, AEW programming is not expected to be exclusive to WBD anymore. The cancellation of Rampage would open doors for the company to produce a new show for a different network.

The show expected to be called ‘AEW: Shockwave’ has been teased by Khan and all reports so far have been pointing towards it airing on Fox Network.

Swerve Strickland is currently off TV after suffering two big losses. He lost the AEW World Title to Bryan Danielson at All In on August 25 and suffered another brutal defeat at the hands of Hangman Page at All Out on September 7.

The Phenomenal One has been absent from WWE programming for more than three months, causing all kinds of speculation about his health and status with the company.

The promotion finally announced his return for the October 4 episode of SmackDown from Nashville during tonight’s episode of the show. The announcement was made via a video package featuring Styles’ best in-ring moment and his catchphrase ‘This is still the house that AJ Styles built’

Apart from this big return, the upcoming SmackDown episode will also feature a couple of high-profile matches. Below you can check out the card for the Bad Blood go-home show:

AJ Styles Reacts To Will Ospreay Using His Move: “Why do you think it bothers me?”

AJ Styles’ Mysterious Absence

AJ Styles has not been seen on WWE programming since WWE Clash At The Castle: Scotland PPV in June. He unsuccessfully challenged Cody Rhodes for the Undisputed WWE Championship at the show.

The former world champion had continued competing at live events. He even traveled with the roster when they made the trip to countries like Japan, Belgium, and Germany. During this time, AJ also made a rare non-WWE appearance, competing at the NOAH Destination event on July 13.

The unexplained absence resulted in much speculation and rumors about the status of the high-flying star. Fans began to wonder if Styles would also be let go from the company like Bobby Lashley when it was revealed that his contract was set to expire later this year.

The announcement of his return, however, confirms that the officials have plans for the wrestling veteran yet and they will likely re-sign him before his deal ends.

Watch: What Happened With Cody Rhodes After SmackDown Went Off Air

0

A lot happened after tonight’s episode of SmackDown from Paycom Center in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma went off air.

The show featured not one but three dark matches including two women’s bouts. The first dark match saw Kairi Sane picking up a submission win over Chelsea Green.

Liv Morgan defended her Women’s title against Zelina Vega in the second dark match of the night. The two women had a lot of fun with the match. Zelina mocked Liv with her signature pose while Liv pulled out the Three Amigos to try and get the win. In the end, Morgan retained her title.

The final non-televised bout of the night featured Cody Rhodes taking on Austin Theory. Rhodes addressed the fans after his win and even held a fan’s baby for a while.

What Happened On SmackDown

The SmackDown episode tonight saw some very interesting developments for The American Nightmare. The main event featured Kevin Owens and Randy Orton taking on The Bloodline.

KO had asked Rhodes not to come out for the match but the Undisputed WWE Champion still tried to help his friends. In doing so, however, he inadvertently caused Owens and Orton to lose the bout.

Kevin Owens was visibly frustrated with Cody for this. Orton tried to make peace between the two but KO also shoved him, opening the possibility for some interesting story developments in the future.

Jade Cargill & Bianca Belair To Host WWE Bad Blood, Tease VIP Guests

0

As the WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions, Jade Cargill and Bianca Belair are two of the biggest stars on the company’s roster. While the EST and the Storm aren’t currently set to compete at Bad Blood 2024, the pair will have a role at WWE’s upcoming Premium Live Event.

During the September 27, edition of WWE SmackDown, Belair and Cargill shared that they will be the official hosts of WWE Bad Blood. Not only that, but the Tag Team Champions also teased surprise appearances by “VIP guests” in Atlanta.

Belair and Cargill join other WWE Superstars who have served as the host of Premium Live Events, including The Miz who (alongside Snoop Dogg) hosted WrestleMania 39. This didn’t go so well for the A-Lister who was forced into impromptu matches with Pat McAfee and Shane McMahon, both of which he lost.

At this year’s Money in the Bank, Trish Stratus hosted the show in her native Toronto, Canada. In NXT, Meta-Four served as the hosts of Stand and Deliver in April of this year.

WATCH: CM Punk Featured In First Trailer For “Let’s Start A Cult”

0

CM Punk has the “cult of personality” but he also will likely be apart of a cult in a new comedy coming in the fall.

“Let’s Start A Cult ” is set to release in theaters starting on October 25 and it will be featuring CM Punk. The first trailer for the film released earlier this Friday and Punk shared the video on his Instagram stories.

The film stars comedian Stavros Halkias as Chip who is a cult leader that survives a mass suicide but so does one of his other members William. The duo goes along to recruit new members and one of those happens to be CM Punk. It’s not totally confirmed, but Punk says the name “Three Balls Billy” in the trailer and that could be the name of his role in the film (however, he could also be referring to the character “William.”) Serendipituouly enough, the movie also features a female character that seemingly appears to portray a former pro wrestler who also joins the ranks of the new cult on tap.

You can check out the first trailer for the film below:

CM Punk isn’t the only wrestler conjuring up filmmaking news on Friday. It was also reported today that MJF will be apart of “Happy Gilmore 2.” Before the news hit of “Let’s Start A Cult,” one of the last comedic roles Punk played was in the Starz series, “Heels” as Ricky Rabies. Along with the “Mr. McMahon” docuseries, “Heels” has just hit Netflix.

Nikkita Lyons Returns To Action After 9 Months At NXT Live Event

0

NXT star Nikkita Lyons has finally made her return to in-ring action after staying on the shelf for more than 9 months due to an injury.

The 25-year-old made her return during the latest NXT Live Event from Davenport, FL. You can check out photos of her return to the brand below:

The status of the Davenport show had been in question until today due to Hurricane Helene. Many wrestling shows have been affected by the same.

TNA recently re-scheduled their TV tapings set for Friday and Saturday while MLW canceled their St. Petersburg show on October 4. Joe Hendry is unable to make this weekend’s House of Glory event due to it. WWE earlier today confirmed however that the NXT house show will continue as planned.

Apart from the return of the injured star, the show also featured Giulia in action. The Japanese star picked up a victory over Wren Sinclair during the event.

Nikkita Lyons In NXT

Nikkita Lyons signed with WWE in 2021 and made her in-ring debut later that year. The female star caught the eye of the fans and went viral after debuting on NXT but her short run has been littered with injuries.

Early in her career, she had to be removed from the NXT Women’s Breakout Tournament of 2022 after suffering a partial MCL tear and an MCL sprain.

The young star spent most of the 2023 rehabbing as well after suffering a torn ACL and meniscus in a match against Jakara Jackson during the January 17, 2023 episode of WWE NXT Level Up.

It had been less than a month since Lyons returned to action when she was put on the shelf again in early 2024. Prior to tonight’s show, she competed against Blair Davenport at the January 9, 2024 episode of NXT.

AEW’s MJF Lands Role in Netflix’s Happy Gilmore 2 With Adam Sandler

0

MJF has made a name for himself as one of AEW’s top stars and boasts the record for the longest reign as AEW World Champion. Now, the self-professed scumbag is joining the cast of Netflix’s Happy Gilmore 2, Deadline reports.

MJF will join Adam Sandler, who is reprising his role as the titular Gilmore, a failed hockey player with a volatile temper who joins the world of professional golf. Julie Bowen and Christopher McDonald will reprise their roles as love interest Virginia Venit and golfing antagonist Shooter McGavin. Bad Bunny, who’s no stranger to the world of wrestling, has also joined the cast while Sandler has teased a cameo by Travis Kelce.

MJF’s most recent match for AEW saw him best Daniel Garcia at All Out 2024 but was laid out with a piledriver after the match. With no return data in sight for the former World Champion, MJF will have time to work on Happy Gilmore 2 before he returns to the ring.

MJF On The Big Screen

MJF portrayed Lance Von Erich in 2023’s The Iron Claw, a film he also served as an Executive Producer on, but his scenes were ultimately cut from the final edit. That same year, MJF loaned his voice to Waylon Jones, aka Killer Croc in Justice League x RWBY: Super Heroes & Huntsmen, Part Two.

Although MJF has yet to find his big live-action break in acting, the AEW star has plenty in the pipeline. The 28-year-old recently wrapped up work on the indie comedy The Floaters alongside Seth Green and Aya Cash and has filmed scenes for Stranglehold, playing one-half of a burly duo alongside Ron Perlman (Hellboy.)

Only a select few wrestlers have successfully transitioned from wrestling to acting and MJF intends to join the likes of Dwayne Johnson, Dave Bautista, and John Cena. Stay tuned to SEScoops for the latest on MJF and his projects outside the squared circle.

MLW Cancels Oct. 4 Event Due To Hurricane Helene

0

MLW is making sure to look out for the safety of its talent and fans as Court Bauer has made the decision to cancel it’s Oct. 4 show due to the danger surrounding Hurricane Helene.

Major League Wrestling was set to put on MLW Slaughterhouse in St. Petersburg on October 4 at the famous Coliseum, a venue the company sold out earlier this year for their War Chamber event. The official announcement from the company is as follows.

The event was stacking itself up for a big card as Satoshi Kojima was going to defend his MLW World Heavyweight Championship against Ultimo Guerrero in an international title fight. CONTRA Unit were going to defend their World Tag Team Championships against The Bomaye Fight Club and Trevor Lee was going to make his MLW debut against Donovan Dijak.

Dustin Rhodes Expected To Re-Sign With AEW

0

Dustin Rhodes has been a strong veteran presence for AEW and from initial reports, “The Natural” may be sticking around a promotion he’s becoming synonymous with.

According to Dave Meltzer in the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Rhodes, who has been with AEW since the very beginning, is expected to ink a new deal with the company. Weeks back, Dustin confirmed that his contract was up this September and doesn’t have plans to retire.

It was earlier this week that Rhodes expressed his love for All Elite Wrestling on social media, adding that the half-a-decade has been good for his soul.

“I love AEW. For 5 yrs I have been on this “One Last Ride”, and I have loved it. This place is good for my soul!”

For these past five years, Dustin has been an invaluable asset for the company. He not only kicked AEW off with a memorable PPV match against his brother Cody Rhodes at the first Double or Nothing, but Dustin has been a vital part at developing wrestlers backstage. So many women in the company give Rhodes major credit for the contributions Rhodes has made with his insight and training.

Rhodes currently holds two titles in AEW as he’s the ROH World Tag Team Champions with Sammy Guevara and ROH Trios Tag Team Champions with Ross and Marshall Von Erich.

Rhodes also keeps very busy by being a teacher of the one true sport. For several years, Dustin has been operating the “Rhodes Wrestling Academy” and just announced his new wrestling promotion with his Rhodes Wrestling Association. The promotion’s first show will take place on November 21 in Leander, TX.

Best Celebrity Matches in WWE History (Ranked)

0

WWE has always had a flair for the dramatic, blending athleticism with entertainment to create memorable moments. Over the years, WWE has attracted some of the biggest names in Hollywood, sports, and music, often culminating in high-profile matches.

Celebrity appearances are more than just a way to generate buzz, they’ve been a staple of WWE’s rich history, often producing some of the most entertaining and unforgettable matches.

Let’s dive into the best celebrity matches in WWE history, ranked from impressive to iconic.

1. Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Big Show (WrestleMania 24)

Arguably the most famous celebrity match in WWE history, Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Big Show was an epic encounter at WrestleMania 24. Billed as “The Money vs. The Giant,” the boxing champion took on the 7-foot Big Show in a no-disqualification match.

Despite being massively outsized, Mayweather used his quickness and clever tactics, including brass knuckles, to secure a shocking victory over the wrestling behemoth.

Mayweather’s natural charisma, paired with Big Show’s ability to work well with non-wrestlers, turned this bout into a classic spectacle .

2. Mr. T & Hulk Hogan vs. Roddy Piper & Paul Orndorff (WrestleMania I)

The inaugural WrestleMania in 1985 set the standard for the future of WWE, and Mr. T’s involvement was a major part of that success. Teaming up with Hulk Hogan, the A-Team star took on the villainous duo of Roddy Piper and Paul Orndorff.

Mr. T, though a novice in the wrestling ring, held his own and helped draw mainstream attention to the fledgling event.

This match is historic not only for being one of the main events of the first-ever WrestleMania but also for cementing WWE’s relationship with Hollywood celebrities.

Without this match, WrestleMania might not have achieved the same level of pop-culture relevance it enjoys today .

3. Bad Bunny & Damian Priest vs. The Miz & John Morrison (WrestleMania 37)

One of the more recent entries in this list, Bad Bunny’s performance at WrestleMania 37 shocked fans and critics alike. Many were skeptical about the Grammy Award-winning artist’s involvement in a WWE match, but Bunny quickly silenced the doubters by putting on a show-stealing performance alongside Damian Priest.

From performing a Canadian Destroyer to showing impressive ring awareness, Bad Bunny proved he wasn’t just there for a paycheck. His dedication to the craft and ability to take bumps earned him respect within the WWE Universe. The Miz and John Morrison, experienced veterans, played their roles to perfection, making this match a highlight of the event .

4. Lawrence Taylor vs. Bam Bam Bigelow (WrestleMania XI)

NFL legend Lawrence Taylor stepped into the ring against the formidable Bam Bam Bigelow in the main event of WrestleMania XI, a decision that shocked many at the time.

Taylor was known for his aggressive playing style in football, but few believed that would translate into professional wrestling. However, to the surprise of many, Taylor put on a commendable performance, going toe-to-toe with Bigelow in a surprisingly competitive match.

The Lucha Bros Won’t Be In WWE Any Time Soon

0

Wrestling fans excited to see The Lucha Bros. crossover to the WWE Universe will have to wait a while before that comes to fruition. Recent reports that Pentagon Jr. and Rey Fenix had signed multi-year contracts with WWE, and merchandise was already being created, were false — they both remain under contract with AEW.

Due to Rey Fenix missing ring time due to various injuries in recent years, Dave Meltzer reports that Tony Khan is tacking on nearly a year to Fenix’s existing contract to make up the lost time.

As for his older brother Penta, his contract still has a few months remaining before it expires. Negotiations with WWE haven’t taken place yet, but Penta intends to explore that option once he’s able to.

WWE has reportedly sent overtures to Penta that they’ll make competitive offer, solidifying his decision to leave AEW. Penta has expressed that his primary goal is to provide for his family as he moves into the later stages of his career. Meltzer also noted that Penta’s departure is driven by several factors, including growing frustration with AEW.

Both Fenix and Penta have recently trademarked three different properties, fueling further speculation about their AEW futures.

While Penta has remained quiet about his contract status, he has stated that he is currently enjoying his time with All Elite Wrestling. However, back in August, Fenix withdrew from an independent wrestling appearance, leading many to believe that he may be WWE-bound.

Swerve Strickland Overpaid? “We Shake the Foundation of Things”

Swerve Strickland says he’s worth every penny that he earns, and thinks its kind of funny that these “overpaid” labels get thrown around with people of color.

The former World Champion of All Elite Wrestling recently put pen-to-pater on a new multi-year contract with the organization. He signed the contract at Wembley Stadium on the AEW All In London kickoff show, just hours before he’d lose the title against Bryan Danielson. Shortly thereafter, it was rumored that WWE was interested in signing Strickland, but felt AEW overpaid and offered a sum that was far above market value.

In a candid interview with The Breakfast Club morning radio show, Strickland did not hold back, pointing out how conversations around athlete pay often change when it involves a Black performer.

“They only complain when a Black person gets paid, I will say that. We shake the foundation of things like that,” Strickland remarked.

He went on to challenge WWE’s stance, questioning why his contract was even a topic of discussion for a company that had parted ways with him two years ago.

“‘Oh snap, wait. That’s not what we would pay.’ Then why are you calling me? Why are you asking me? If I’m not your concern, then don’t worry about it. Don’t worry about my pockets and our money.”

Strickland made it clear that he holds no grudges towards WWE, acknowledging their decision not to renew his contract previously. Instead, he emphasized his determination to continue succeeding in the wrestling world.

“We’re good. You have your talent. You made your decision with me two years ago. No hard feelings from me. I keep it moving and I’m going to figure my way out and I’m going to build myself up.”

Strickland’s comments highlight a broader conversation about fairness and representation in sports contracts, particularly regarding Black athletes.

Trick Williams Discusses Potential Alliance with Former Partner Carmelo Hayes

NXT star Trick Williams is open to the idea of possibly joining forces with his former partner, Carmelo Hayes.

After NXT was rebranded to NXT 2.0 back in 2021, Trick Williams and Carmelo Hayes started teaming up. During their run together Hayes thrived as champion while Williams was a star in the making. Williams tried to come out of Hayes’ shadow and went after gold as well.

However, things started to heat up between the two and they split at NXT Vengeance Day when Hayes turned on his best friend. This led to a grudge match at NXT Stand & Deliver which Williams won. Eventually, Hayes was called up to the main roster while Williams is enjoying his run at NXT.

Trick Williams recently spoke to Going Ringside about the idea of burying the hatchet with Hayes. The former NXT Champion stated that Hayes was always the one with the issue. However, Willims assured if Hayes needs help, he has got his back.

“I mean, to be honest with you, I never had a problem with Melo. He had a problem with me. But, of course (there’s a chance we could rekindle that friendship). If I tell you, ‘You’re my boy, you’re my brother,’ I mean that all the way thick and through so, man, I can see us having room to — you know, if he needs my help, I got his back.”

Trick Williams will have another opportunity to reclaim the NXT Championship. NXT is set to premiere on the CW Network in Rosemont, Illinois on October 1st and Williams will challenge Ethan Page for the NXT title. It has been also announced that CM Punk will serve as the special guest referee.

On September 27, 1999, Mankind (WWE Hall of Famer Mick Foley) hosted a special “This Is Your Life” segment on WWE Raw in honor of his close friend, The Rock.

Mankind introduced several figures from The Rock’s past. Among the guests were The Rock’s high school sweetheart, sparking a hilarious moment when he reminisced about her parents’ couch. Another notable guest was The Rock’s former football coach, which led to The Rock humorously recalling how he was forced to run sprints after delivering a DDT to an opposing quarterback.

The Rock had the audience in the palm of his hand, effortlessly delivering his iconic catchphrases while roasting each of Foley’s special guests.

The segment showcased both The Rock and Mankind at their comedic best and remains a prime example of how entertaining “sports entertainment” can be when it’s done right.

WWE has attempted to recreate this magic through subsequent “This Is Your Life” efforts, none have quite captured lightning in a bottle like that unforgettable night on 9/27/99.

Zachary Wentz Reflects On Short-Lived TNA X Division Title Run

Zachary Wentz held the TNA X Division Championship for just a couple of weeks, but the high-flying wrestler remains proud of his brief title reign.

Wentz won the Ultimate X match to capture the TNA X Division Championship at TNA Emergence. He even appeared as the X Division Champion at NXT No Mercy, where he defeated his former Rascalz teammate Wes Lee. However, his reign came to an end at TNA Victory Road when he was defeated by ‘Speedball’ Mike Bailey.

In an interview with 3W-Wrestling, Wentz shared what the title run meant to him. He explained that the X Division, known for its high-flying, high-risk, and fast-paced matches, perfectly aligns with his wrestling style. He also expressed his belief that the X Division has significantly impacted the broader world of professional wrestling.

“I mean, it [TNA X Division Title] means a lot because if you look at my style of wrestling, it is very much X Division Championship-style wrestling,” Wentz said. “I feel like the X Division is the division in professional wrestling, and its style has completely influenced professional wrestling as a whole. If you look at matches now, they’re very much X Division-type matches. So, it definitely meant a lot to me.”

Wentz also reflected on the significance of the title beyond its duration.

“Especially, like I said before, look at all the legends that have held the title—not just them, but my brother Trey [Miguel], he’s held that title. And he was a great champion, so it meant a lot to me. Sure, it may have been a short reign, but that’s okay because I made history. At the end of the day, people aren’t going to focus on how short it was. They’re going to remember that I made history as the first X Division Champion to be featured on WWE television. So, it means a lot to me.”

Wentz recently ignited a feud with NXT’s Wes Lee after the latter betrayed his Rascalz teammate. The two are set to clash at the NXT on CW premiere on October 1st.

Bron Breakker Opens Up About NXT Segment With The Undertaker

Bron Breakker has opened up about his segment with Undertaker in NXT.

The October 10, 2023 date saw the renewal of an old rivalry in wrestling as NXT went head-to-head with AEW Dynamite once more since the end of the Wednesday night wars. WWE took the competition very seriously and booked a number of big names for the show, including none other than The Undertaker.

The former NXT Champion recently had an interview with 99.5 WKDQ radio to promote Monday’s Raw from Ford Center in Evansville, Indiana. He discussed things such as losing the IC title to Jey Uso, his rivalry with Carmelo Hayes and more.

When asked about his experience of working with the Undertaker, Bron Breakker revealed that the Phenom actually sat down with him after the show and they have developed a relationship since then:

“We sat and we talked for a long time after that show. He just gave me a lot of great advice. That sort of started a little bit of relationship with him and I since then. Every time I see him in the building, or when he comes around, I always go up, we have conversation. Undertaker’s the best. He’s great.”

Absolute Honor For Me: Bron Breakker

The segment in question came after a match between Breakker and Carmelo Hayes. Hayes had John Cena in his corner while Paul Heyman joined Bron. Hayes won the match in the end. The second-generation star didn’t like the result and he continued his assault on Melo.

This is when the Dead Man showed up and he delivered a chokeslam to the young star. According to Bron Breakker, it was an experience he’ll never forget:

“Absolute honor for me to even be in that position with him, with such a legend. It was an incredible night. That’s a night I’ll never forget. That’ll probably be some sort of poster or picture that’s on my wall forever. So surreal moment between me and him, and [I’m] just so thankful I got to be a part of it. He’s awesome. Love that dude.”

Apart from Cena and Taker, the October 10 NXT also featured names such as Cody Rhodes, Asuka and LA Knight. With the star-studded lineup, WWE’s third brand managed to crush AEW’s flagship show in ratings, drawing 921,000 viewers compared to 609,000 viewers from their competitors.
