Chris Jericho Bringing Back Old Gimmick on AEW Dynamite Next Week

Chris Jericho will be bringing back a fan favorite gimmick for his upcoming grudge match with Eddie Kingston.

On the July 20 episode of Fyter Fight week two for Dynamite, Jericho and Kingston will collide in a Barbed Wire Everywhere match. The Jericho Appreciation Society will be hanging above the ring in a Shark Cage.

This rivalry has been brewing for months and has been quite personal. Despite his team scoring a win over the Jericho Appreciation Society at Blood & Guts, Kingston wants to make Jericho bleed for all that he’s done to his friends such as Ruby Soho.

Chris Jericho has been presenting himself as a sports entertainer since going back to a heel role on AEW TV. He’s also been dubbing himself as a “wizard,” throwing fireballs in the face of his foes.

During a promo on the July 13 episode of Fyter Fest Dynamite, Jericho revealed that he wil be bringing back his Painamker gimmick for the Barbed Wire Everywhere match with Eddie Kingston.

During a backstage interview in response to Jericho, Kingston promised to hurt his fierce rival. Ruby Soho was seen in an arm sling after Tay Conti slammed a car door on her hand last week.

AEW Star Missing Fyter Fest Dynamite Tonight

A key member of the AEW roster isn’t in the building for the Fyter Fest episode of Dynamite.

Tonight (July 13), a special edition of Dynamite will be held inside Enmarket Arena in Savannah, GA. AEW has stacked this year’s Fyter Fest event with title matches and grudge matches.

This will be a two-week special.

Set for week one is an AEW World Tag Team Title match with champions The Young Bucks putting their gold on the line against Ricky Starks and Powerhouse Hobbs, as well as Keith Lee and Swerve Strickland.

There will also be a TNT Championship match between titleholder Wardlow and Orange Cassidy.

Interim AEW World Champion Jon Moxley will collide with Konosuke Takeshita in a non-title match. If Takeshita wins, he will get a future title opportunity.

Former tag team partners turned bitter rivals will also clash. It’ll be Claudio Castagnoli of Blackpool Combat Club vs. Jake Hager of the Jericho Appreciation Society.

Dustin Rhodes Missing Fyter Fest Week One

One star who will not be in the backstage area for tonight’s kickoff to Fyter Fest will be Dustin Rhodes.

Rhodes took to his Twitter account to reveal that he is too sick to attend the show.

“Not at #AEWDynamite #FyterFest tonight as I am super sick at home. Y’all tune in to @TBSNetwork at 8/7 central.”

AEW Dynamite Fyter Fest Week 1 aired live from the Enmarket Arena in Savannah, Georgia. In addition to the takeaways below, AEW All Out was announced for Sunday September 4th from the NOW Arena in Chicago.

Here are the takeaways from Week 1 of AEW Fyter Fest:

Wardlow Retained The TNT Championship

Wardlow defended the TNT Championship against Orange Cassidy in the first match of the night. Cassidy hit some lazy kicks before going for a Tornado DDT. Wardlow blocked it and went for a Powerbomb but Orange escaped. Orange hit a Hurricanrana but Wardlow showed off his agility and landed on his feet. Best Friends provided a distraction and Chuck slid a chainsaw into the ring. The referee then kicked them both out in a goofy sequence during the title match.

Cassidy went for a punch but Wardlow caught his hand. Cassidy retreated to the outside and Wardlow chased him around. Wardlow stopped and grabbed Danhausen from under the ring. Orange ran around the other side and caught Wardlow with the Orange Punch. Back in the ring, he went for another one but Wardlow caught him with a Belly to Belly Throw as Dynamite went to a commercial break.

When Dynamite returned, Wardlow went for the Powerbomb but Cassidy countered into a DDT. Orange followed it up with another one but Wardlow kicked out at one. Wardlow planted Cassidy with the F10 but Orange somehow kicked out at two. Wardlow went for the Powerbomb but Cassidy countered into a Hurricanrana.

Orange hit a Suicide Dive through the ropes and shoved the TNT Champion into the ring post. Cassidy went for a diving DDT off the top rope but Wardlow caught him. Orange hit the Stundog Millionaire and then Beach Break for a two count. Wardlow then planted Cassidy with a massive Powerbomb for the pinfall victory. Wardlow is still the TNT Champion. After the match, Cassidy and Wardlow fist-bumped in the ring.

Chris Jericho Warned Eddie Kingston

Chris Jericho made his way to the ring for a promo about Eddie Kingston. The two will battle each other in a Barbed Wire Everywhere match with JAS suspended above the ring in a shark cage next week. Jericho joked that being friends with Eddie Kingston is a worse curse than what Danhausen can do. Chris boasted about JAS injuring Santana, shaving Ortiz’s head, and taking out Bryan Danielson at Anarchy at the Arena.

Jericho added that Ruby Soho has a mangled hand because of Kingston and added “you need to take better care of your chicks, Eddie”. Chris wondered how many barbed wire matches Eddie has won in his career and noted that he won the “first barbed wire match in Canadian history at the tender age of 22”. Jericho claimed that this will be the final fight between the two and Eddie can go back to drinking and smoking after the match. The crowd broke out in a loud “Eddie!” chant. Jericho closed the promo by vowing to spill a lot of Eddie’s blood next week and called Kingston a loser.

Jon Moxley def. Konosuke Takeshita

Interim AEW Champion Jon Moxley faced Konosuke Takeshita tonight on Dynamite. If Konosuke won the match he would get a future title shot. Moxley and Takeshita traded shoulder tackles to start off the action but neither man would go down. Jon got Konosuke in a Headlock but he escaped and leveled the champion with a Dropkick.

Takeshita and Moxley then traded chops in the middle of the ring. Jon caught him with a Clothesline and paced around the ring. The two then battled to the ring apron and Konosuke connected with a release German Suplex. They traded punches on the floor before Jon caught Takeshita with a boot to the face as Dynamite went to a commercial break.

During the break, Moxley remained in control and hit a Superplex. When Dynamite returned, Takeshita was busted open and Moxley unloaded some kicks to the midsection. Konosuke bounced off the ropes and leveled Moxley with a Spear. Takeshita followed it up with a Brainbuster and went for the cover but Jon kicked out at the last moment.

Konosuke went for a Frog Splash but Moxley got his knees up. Jon applied a Headlock and transitioned into an Armbar in the middle of the ring. Takeshita battled through the pain and was able to reach the bottom rope to break the hold and the match continued.

Moxley and Takeshita traded forearms to the face in the middle of the ring. Konosuke sent the champ to the outside and hit him with a flip on the floor. Back in the ring, Takeshita connected with the Frog Splash but Jon kicked out at two.

They then traded forearms to the face once again in the middle of the ring. Moxley went for the Bulldog Choke but Takeshita countered into a Blue Thunder Bomb for a two count. Moxley went for the Deathrider but Takeshita escaped and hit a Northern Lights Suplex for another near fall. Jon unloaded a couple of headbutts before hitting the Deathrider. Moxley followed it up with a bunch of elbows to the face and then locked in the Bulldog Choke for the submission victory.

Christian Cage & Luchasaurus Destroyed The Varsity Blonds

Christian Cage made his way to the entrance ramp and waited for Luchasaurus. Cage brought up the Varsity Blonds waiting in the ring. Christian noted that Brian Pillman Jr.’s father was average at best but respects him for spilling his blood, sweat, and tears in that ring. Christian mocked Pillman Jr. and pointed out that Griff Garrison looks like Jungle Boy. Luchasaurus then had a singles match with Griff and beat the hell out of him.

Luchasaurus planted Garrison with a release German Suplex and Griff rolled out of the ring. The big man put Griff’s face against the ring post and kicked it. Back in the ring, Luchasaurus delivered two Chokeslams and applied a submission hold for the victory. After the match, Luchasaurus put Brian Pillman Jr. on the timekeeper’s table. He then gave Griff a third Chokeslam but the table didn’t break. Luchasaurus hit Garrison with another Chokeslam on top of Pillman and the table broke.

Claudio Castagnoli is 3-0

Claudio Castagnoli faced Jake Hager tonight on Dynamite. Castagnoli started off the match with an uppercut but Hager quickly battled back. Jake went for an Ankle Lock but Claudio broke it up. Claudio then hit a 619 for a near fall. Hager sent Claudio to the corner and unloaded a bunch of Clotheslines.

Castagnoli responded with a series of uppercuts and then a Bulldog for a two count. Claudio bounced Jake’s face off the top turnbuckle several times before climbing to the top turnbuckle. Hager tripped him up and slammed him to the canvas. Hager hit a Vader Bomb and went for the cover but Claudio kicked out at two as Dynamite went to a commercial break.

When Dynamite returned, Castagnoli sent Hager into the barricade and hit him with another uppercut. Back in the ring, Claudio followed it up with a Splash off the top rope for a near fall. Castagnoli signaled it was time and hit Hager with The Swing for several rotations. Claudio then locked in a Sharpshooter in the middle of the ring. Jake signaled for Ange and Daddy Magic to rush the ring. They did and provided a distraction for Hager to escape. Jake went for the Ankle Lock again but Claudio escaped. Castagnoli delivered a pop-up Uppercut and then the Ricola Bomb for the pinfall victory.

Mercedes Martinez Confronted Serena Deeb

Anna Jay battled Serena Deeb tonight on Dynamite. Serena controlled the action early and set up for a Piledriver. Anna revered it into a Back Body Drop but Deeb got the momentum right back with a submission hold. Deeb connected with a Dragon Screw and went for another submission hold but Anna countered into a choke hold in the middle of the ring.

Deeb escaped and connected with an Armdrag. Serena followed it up with a Half Crab for the submission victory. After the bell, Deeb wouldn’t let go and ROH Champion Mercedes Martinez made the save. Deeb and Martinez traded words after the match to end the segment. Tay Conti and Anna Jay then argued backstage.

Keith Lee & Swerve Strickland Captured The AEW Tag Titles

The Young Bucks defended the AEW Tag Team Championships against Powerhouse Hobbs & Ricky Starks, and Swerve Strickland and Keith Lee in the main event. Keith Lee and Matt Jackson started off the match. Matt avoided a couple of Clotheslines before retreating to the corner to tag in Nick.

Swerve Strickland tagged in and battled with Nick Jackson. Nick and Swerve battled out of the ring and both went for a Dropkick at the same time. Back in the ring, Nick took Swerve down and applied an Armbar. Swerve battled to his feet and Ricky Starks tagged in. Matt planted Starks with a few Northern Lights Suplexes. Matt then delivered a double Northern Lights Suplex to Strickland and Starks.

Keith Lee and Powerhouse Hobbs planted Matt with a double Suplex and a big brawl broke out. Keith and Swerve isolated Matt in the corner. Lee delivered a big chop to Matt’s chest and Swerve followed it up with a diving uppercut. Matt shoved Keith Lee to the corner and he accidentally knocked Swerve off the turnbuckle.

Powerhouse Hobbs tagged in and planted Strickland with a Backbreaker. Hobbs sent Swerve across the ring and Ricky delivered a Dropkick as Dynamite went to the final commercial break of the night.

When Dynamite returned, Keith Lee caught Nick and Powerbombed him onto Matt on the apron. Lee then went for another Powerbomb in the ring but Nick escaped. Powerhouse Hobbs tagged in and traded strikes with Keith Lee. Hobbs and Lee both collided with a Crossbody in the middle of the ring and fell to the canvas.

Lee was the first up and climbed to the middle turnbuckle. Keith set up for a Superplex but Hobbs knocked him down. Hobbs climbed to the top turnbuckle and connected with a massive Frog Splash for a near fall.

Ricky Starks and Nick Jackson tagged in. Nick battled out of the corner but Hobbs got Nick in the Electric Chair. Ricky walked across the top rope and connected with a Cutter for a near fall. Swerve and Matt then tagged in and Strickland hit a Backbreaker. Strickland followed it up with a big Clothesline but turned around into a Superkick from Nick.

Young Bucks hit Lee with a couple of Superkicks and then teamed up with Ricky Starks for a moment. Ricky joined in on the Superkick Party before the Young Bucks sent him down with a couple as well. They hit Powerhouse Hobbs with a double Superkick and he fell onto the referee. Young Bucks brought the titles into the ring and Swerve took them away. Strickland made it seem like he was going to hit Keith Lee but dropped them instead.

Matt hit Swerve with a low blow and then bashed him over the head with the title. Matt went for the cover but Swerve still managed to kick out. Young Bucks followed it up with the BTE Trigger but Starks broke it up. Young Bucks went for the Meltzer Driver but Keith broke it up. Strickland and Keith Lee delivered a Double Stomp Powerbomb combo but Hobbs broke it up.

Powerhouse hit everyone with a bunch of Spinebusters as the crowd popped. Starks tagged in and leveled Strickland with a Spear for a two count. Keith Lee knocked Young Bucks out of the ring and then sent Hobbs over the top rope as well. Ricky knocked Lee to the apron but Keith responded with a headbutt. Strickland used Keith Lee as a springboard to flip onto everyone below. Back in the ring, Lee hit a big shoulder tackle and then ridiculously flipped onto everyone below. Strickland then delivered a Double Stomp for the pinfall victory.

A former AEW star has unveiled the one thing that bothered him about working under the AEW banner.

Talents come and go in the wrestling business. Some become lifers with one organization but most do not.

Even longtime company stalwarts such as Chris Jericho and Paul Wight eventually left the company they had called home for many years.

In the case of one talent who had been working for AEW, a promising start didn’t exactly lead to the road he had hoped and now he’s seeking opportunities elsewhere.

Alan Angels Not a Fan of Wrestling in Mask

In late June, it was revealed that Alan Angels’ AEW contract was up. It was said that Angels would be making per appearance dates for AEW but it seems that plan is no longer in place.

Angels recently surfaced for IMPACT Wrestling and it appears he’s embracing life outside of AEW.

During an appearance on the Two Man Power Trip of Wrestling podcast, Alan Angels admitted that he did not enjoy wrestling in a mask during his time with The Dark Order faction.

“Personally, no, I didn’t like the mask. I think it was a good look. I think it looks cool. But, personally, I didn’t like wrestling in it.

“It’s just uncomfortable and I have to worry about it staying on all the time and making sure it doesn’t fall off. You got to fix it so you can see through the eye holes and stuff like that. I personally didn’t like it. But like I said, I did think it was kind of a cool look for sure.”

Tony Khan Gives Update On Keith Lee Following Lee’s Cryptic Tweet

Keith Lee turned some heads last night when he posted a short statement on his Twitter account hinting that he may be leaving to deal with a potential family issue, adding that it was bad news.

The AEW superstar and former NXT champion has kept the situation pretty hush since tweeting it out last night, but he did promote his participation in this evening’s triple threat AEW tag title match at Fyter Fest. His full tweet reads:

“Got some very much less than stellar news today….No matter the results, tomorrow’s match belongs to my two brothers. It’s all I can do until I return. Love you boys.”

Tony Khan spoke was able to provide an update on Lee’s situation during “Tony Time” on today’s Busted Open Radio. The company president doesn’t reveal too much information other than Lee will still be competing tonight, and that he has AEW’s full support for his situation.

“I don’t want to get into Keith’s personal business. Keith is here, he is wrestling tonight. He had a family situation. It’s not my place to talk about it. Keith is here and here to wrestle, as I understand it. I can’t really comment on what is happening, but we’re going to support him through what is happening.”

Lee debuted for AEW back in February of this year. He has since been on their Revolution, Double or Nothing, and Forbidden Door pay-per-view cards as a featured act. Sescoops would like to wish him well on his situation.

WWE NIL Signee Dismissed From College Wrestling Team

One of WWE’s NIL, or Next In Line, recruits has been dismissed from their college wrestling team due to a report of sexual assault made against them.

Back in December 2021, AJ Ferrari was announced as part of the Inaugural NIL Class. AJ Ferrari was a member of the Oklahoma State wrestling team.

Report Filed & Athlete Dismissed

On Monday, according to The O’Colly, AJ Ferrari was dismissed from the Oklahoma State wrestling team. Oklahoma State University also confirmed the report to Pistols Firing.

On July 5, a woman from Stillwater, Oklahoma filed a restraining order against the former collegiate athlete. The investigation is still ongoing, and official records from the report have not been released.

The Stillwater Police Department announced that its Criminal Investigations Department is investigating a report of sexual assault made against the former Oklahoma State wrestling team member.

National Champion Let Go

Ferrari was 30-1 in his career at Oklahoma State. During his freshman season, he went 20-1 and won a national championship at 197 pounds. He was 10-0 as a sophomore before a car accident ended his season. As a result of the accident, he suffered internal damage to his shoulder.

In April, AJ said he was going to win more National Championships before getting the WWE Championship.

Alberto Del Rio Praises AEW’s Penta El Zero

Former WWE Superstar Alberto Del Rio recently spoke with SEScoops correspondent Steve Fall for NBC Sports Boston about his love for Penta El Zero.

“He’s a great kid someone that loves the business. I respect the business. It doesn’t matter how many years have passed and how these days he is one of the biggest stars in wrestling he’s still that same guy that I met 10 years ago and came to me and said oh hey how are you sir how are you and I was like don’t call me sir…. made me feel old…. Paul Wight Assures Fans That Captain Insano Is Still Coming To AEW

The legendary Paul Wight (fka The Big Show) recently joined Wrestling Inc. for an in-depth conversation about his current run in AEW, with Wight providing an interesting update on one of his oldest wrestling incarnations.

The former world champion stated last year that AEW and Tony Khan had secured the rights to Captain Insano, the fictional pro-wrestling character played by Wight in the hit Adam Sandler comedy, The Waterboy. During his interview Wight gave some more details as to where they are in the process.

“He’ll [Captain Insano] be back. The guy who wrote The Waterboy has approved. Tony Khan and I have secured the rights to Captain Insano. There’s already an outfit made, the whole nine yards. We’re doing a lot of prep work, and this will be my last hoorah so to speak.”

One question Wight would be asked is what type of presentation Captain Insano would have in AEW. He states that this is more for fun, and fans shouldn’t expect him to be a world champion anytime soon.

Let’s be honest – I don’t think this character is going to be a killer going out there trying to beat Jon Moxley for the AEW World Championship. At this point, I think this character is just to have fun. We’ll see how it goes, but for me right now, this is just a chance to have fun with this character and be a bright spot on the show.”

Speaking of competing…Wight has not wrestled on AEW programming for months. However, he does plan on competing in the ring more.

“My whole reason for coming to AEW was to work on commentary and to compete more.”

Another Huge Sign that Sasha Banks has Left WWE

This Saturday will mark two months to the day that Sasha Banks and Naomi walked out of the May 16 edition of Monday Night Raw.

Since walking out over a creative difference with the planned main event, WWE has done all they can to distance themselves from the now-former WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions.

Neither Banks nor Naomi have appeared on WWE programming in weeks and it once again appears that Banks is finished for good.

The Signing

In recent weeks, there have been reports that Sasha Banks has been released by WWE, though neither side has publicly confirmed the news.

Now, there’s been a major sign that Banks is gone from WWE, as she is set for a meet and greet that is not affiliated with the company.

On Twitter, the Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo (C2E2) announced that Banks will be appearing at their upcoming convention, which will run from August 5 to August 7.

The tweet referred to “The Boss” by her real name Mercedes Varnado, and referenced her role as Koska Reeves in Disney+ hit ‘The Mandalorian.’

Interestingly, C2E2 refers to other wrestlers appearing, as “WWE’s Mick Foley, Trish Stratus, and Lita” but references Banks by her real name.

What about Naomi?

While Banks is seemingly already finished with WWE, her tag team partner’s situation is less clear.

Naomi was also suspended due to the now-infamous Raw walkout, but it doesn’t appear that she has been released just yet.

Responding to a tweet by ex-WWE Superstar Lince Dorado, who asked when they will be able to work together again, Naomi says she hopes to be able to work outside WWE as soon as possible.

Some have speculated that Naomi’s family, as she is married to The Bloodline’s Jimmy Uso has saved her a harsher punishment by WWE.

Tito Ortiz Discusses Shane McMahon Inviting Him To WWE Tryout In 2019

Former UFC light heavyweight champion Tito Ortiz was once invited to tryout for WWE in 2019 by Shane McMahon.

Speaking in a recent interview with Chris Van Vliet, Ortiz was asked about a potential run in professional wrestling. Ortiz detailed an opportunity he had back in 2000, when he was UFC champion, during an interview he did on WWE programming.

Initially, Tito Ortiz believed it would be a standard interview, but later found out the WWE were hoping to see his personality, or perhaps some theatrics from “The Huntington Beach Bad Boy.”

“I went to WrestleMania, they came through Anaheim, I was champion at the time. It was 2000. I went and did…I thought it was going to be a normal interview like this, sit down and talk, but they were looking to see what kind of personality and character I had.

“I didn’t know that. I wish I would have known that because I would have sold myself way better. I was too mellow [mild] mannered. They wanted to see the crazy Huntington Beach Boy, and no one told me anything or said a word to me. I went and was being polite and respectful. Never heard anything back.”

In 2019 he was again interviewed by WWE, but made the same mistake of not showcasing his personality. However, he was contacted by Shane McMahon to work out at the WWE Performance Center.

After some good in-ring work, Ortiz was optimistic about the possibility of doing something with WWE moving forward, but after the COVID 19 pandemic, he heard nothing back.

“2019, Shane McMahon reached out to me and said, ‘What do you think about coming in and trying out?’ I went and did it and, once again, I didn’t think about this, ‘that’s why they didn’t do it.’ I wasn’t over the top. They want someone over the top and be, not crazy, but be an eye-catcher.

“I went to [The Performance Center], and went and trained with Norman Smiley, an amazing teacher. I was learning stuff that it took some guys six months to learn. he was like, ‘Wow, you really got this.’ Then COVID came and I never heard anything.

“I would like to do some matches. I think I have what it takes. It would take a lot of hard work, I get it, but it’d be fun. It’s a lot of training, but I did it. I did the two weeks, training twice a day.

“I put myself through it and it was hard, but it was like being in college wrestling again. My body is subdued, no problem at all. I had no pain. After I was done, I thought I’d have neck problems, I’ve had four neck surgeries, but I didn’t have any problems. It was good.”

Jake Paul is open to teaming up with his older brother, Logan, in WWE down the line if the opportunity presents itself.

The younger Paul brother was recently interviewed on “Carton & Roberts” over on WFAN Sports Radio 101.9 FM/66AM New York to promote his upcoming pay-per-view (PPV) clash with Hasim Rahman Jr.

During the interview, Paul was asked about potentially joining his older brother, Logan, in WWE. Jake said he’s open to the idea down the line, but not anytime soon as he’s focused on his boxing career.

“The Problem Child” doesn’t want to take the risk of getting injured while he’s still actively competing in boxing. He did, however, note that he believes it’ll be difficult for anyone to defeat a duo of himself and Logan.

“Maybe someday, I just can’t get injured right now going off the top rope…That could be interesting,” Paul said (via MMA News). “I think we could become the WWE Champions, I don’t think anyone would beat us.”

While Jake Paul might not be all-in for WWE at the moment, Logan certainly is. He recently signed a multi-year deal deal with WWE, keeping him around for the foreseeable future.

Logan made his WWE in-ring debut at WrestleMania 38 back in April. He teamed up with The Miz to defeat the team of Rey and Dominik Mysterio. After the match, however, Miz attacked Logan, leaving him in the ring after hitting him with the Skull-Crushing Finale.

Now, a potential matchup involving Miz and Logan Paul is being teased for SummerSlam later this month.

Former WWE Superstar Alberto Del Rio recently spoke with SEScoops correspondent Steve Fall for NBC Sports Boston about the possibility of wrestling for AEW.

Del Rio is open to the idea, and says he deserves to be wrestling on a big stage.

“I would be interested in going to AEW, or any major company… I deserve to be in a major companY.”

He continued, “Once it has been proven that I was always telling the truth about those things, I know, I don’t think…. I know I deserve to be out there to continue entertaining and to rebuild my legacy in the business that I love I would love to be in working for any major company.”

Del Rio said he hasn’t been in touch with anybody from AEW, but has good friends who work there and would welcome the opportunity to be considered All Elite.

“They (AEW)….. I haven’t talked to any anyone in that company. I have talked to people in from other companies, but not from from AEW.”

“I have really good friends over there like Phil… CM Punk and he is one of my friends in the business and Chris Jericho he was always nice to me and we always had a good relationship while we were workin for WWE. I know all the others and we always got along with Daniel Bryan, Jack Swagger and many others from the indy circuit.”

New WWE Role for Big E Revealed

Big E may be out of action but the grind doesn’t stop for the former WWE Champion.

E has been on the shelf since March due to a serious neck injury suffered on an episode of SmackDown. The New Day member landed right on his head and neck off a belly-to-belly suplex from Ridge Holland outside the ring.

He suffered a broken neck but was able to avoid disaster as he didn’t suffer spinal damage or displacement. As of now, he does not need surgery.

With that said, Big E’s C1 vertebra is not ossifying, so he will have to check in with doctors one year after the injury to see the status of his neck and what his in-ring future holds.

Big E’s Sobering Experience

During an interview with ESPN, Big E admitted that being told by doctors that he could’ve died with the kind of fall he had was quite the eye-opener.

“It’s very sobering to hear that,” the 36-year-old said. “… I think to be great at something like [pro wrestling], or at least to be competent, you can’t spend all your time worrying about possibly fatal injuries or breaking your neck. You have to go out there and be free and in the moment. I think a lot of us as performers don’t spend a lot of time thinking about that stuff. I never thought I would be.”

Working With Tomorrow’s Stars

Later this month, Big E will be working with WWE in its search for the stars of the future at a talent tryout featuring college athletes.

Big E discussed wishing there was more that could be done for athletes at the collegiate level.

“I wish there was an exit program for college athletes, because you spend so much of your time on campus studying for your sport or participating for your sport or practicing for your sport,” Big E said.

“You devote so much of your life to it, and then when it’s gone, it is such a distinct drop-off. It’s so hard to prepare for that. That was something that was really hard for me mentally too.”

One former WWE referee has reflected on a big “no-no” for officials.

Being a referee in the wrestling business can be a thankless job. Officials can often make or break a match.

You’re more likely to be chastised for a botch than praised for a job well done as a referee. There are exceptions such as NJPW’s Red Shoes Unno and AEW’s Aubrey Edwards.

Officials also have to follow some strict rules if they work under the WWE banner.

During a new edition of his Monday Mailbag podcast, former WWE referee Mike Chioda revealed an important rule all WWE officials had to follow.

“That’s a no-no. Can’t be wearing sleeves, can’t have tats on the arms. I have one on my arm up here, but my sleeve always covered it.”

There’s no word on whether or not this is still a rule for WWE officials today. Chioda was released from WWE back in April 2020.

Chioda went on to recall the time Vince McMahon asked him to drop some weight for presentation purposes.

“I remember him telling me, ‘drop a few pounds’ and stuff like that, and I’m like, ‘I’m working on it, sir!,’

“I mean, they’re working out more than they’re learning how to referee down there,” Chioda jokes. “These kids come in good shape nowadays, man. Vince has got on me about certain things and it’s exactly how he says it: ‘Hey, pal!’”

An NXT Star has not only undergone a name change but an entirely new look as well.

The NXT brand allows WWE to experiment with different character ideas to see what works and what doesn’t. It is very much a developmental brand these days rather than its own competing show with big names from the indies and internationally.

NXT now has mostly green talent with some veterans sprinkled in to help guide the stars of tomorrow. It’s the newer talent that is typically given fresh gimmicks and names.

That’s exactly what has happened with Axiom, formerly known as “A-Kid.”

Earlier this month, WWE revealed a name change for A-Kid. He’ll now be referred to as Axiom but not much else was known about his appearance.

The attire was partially revealed on the July 12 episode of NXT and it’s a doozy. Axiom will be rocking a mask it seems for his matches.

During the latest vignette, it was announced that the fresh character will be debuting on the July 19 episode of NXT 2.0.

Axiom had competed on the NXT UK brand before making the move to the United States to be a part of NXT 2.0.

Update on Popular AEW Tag Team Not Getting Along

There have been rumblings over the last few weeks of an AEW tag team no longer being on the same page.

The talks simply started as speculation, rather than a report. Fans took notice of Santana and Ortiz not really being together for their feud with the Jericho Appreciation Society.

While the duo had been involved in multi-man tag team matches, they weren’t really seen together, which got people talking.

As they say, where there’s smoke there’s fire.

It’s quite the turn of events as many felt Santana & Ortiz had the potential to eventually win the AEW World Tag Team Titles after the Inner Circle disbanded.

Santana is expected to be out of action for quite some time as he suffered a knee injury during the recent Blood & Guts match.

On top of that, Santana’s AEW contract is reportedly going to be up soon.

While it isn’t confirmed, some have speculated that he has been teasing leaving the promotion once his deal expires.

In 2019, Chris Jericho was one of the very first names to join All Elite Wrestling, a decision that has certainly paid off for the veteran wrestler.

That same year, Jericho became the very first AEW World Champion and has been a mainstay of the company’s programming over the past three years.

Jericho is one of the biggest names to ever compete for Tony Khan but it could be time he returns back to where he once worked.

Jericho may be a huge name in AEW, but it may be time for him to return to WWE.

On Twitter, an article was shared dictating five reasons why the former World Champion will one day come back to WWE, now run by Stephanie McMahon.

Jericho didn’t say anything about the content but did retweet the article, seemingly teasing a comeback.

Jericho and WWE first began speaking in 1995, years before Y2J would actually join the promotion.

That year, there was talk about bringing Jericho in, but he turned down the idea, fearing he would be cast as ‘The Goon,’ a heel ice-hockey player that Jericho felt was a reference to his father Ted Irvine.

Joining in 1999, Jericho would go on to become a nine-time Intercontinental Champion, a record that stands to this day.

He is also the first Undisputed Champion, having defeated The Rock and ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin at Vengeance 2001 to unify the WWF and World Championships.

New QR Code Shared on Latest WWE NXT 2.0

During last week’s Great American Bash special of WWE NXT 2.0, a QR code appeared on the screen and was scanned by fans.

The code sent fans to a web page, containing the sequence 8:10:11, leaving fans to try and figure out what these numbers mean.

Now, a new code has been shared by WWE, giving fans more clues as to what the paint-splattered brand is working towards.

The New Code

On last night’s episode of WWE NXT 2.0, a new QR code was shared on-screen immediately after Solo Sikoa dumped Mr. Robert Stone into a huge trash can.

Fans were quick to scan the code which brought them to a grid of words similar to the popular game ‘Wordle.’

The guesses made are Quinn, Becky, Crews, Trick, Brock, and Toxic, which all relate to current WWE programming.

Fans immediately connected the guesses to Xyon Quinn, Becky Lynch, Apollo Crews, Trick Williams, Brock Lesnar and Toxic Attraction, the stable led by NXT Women’s Champion Mandy Rose.

Deciphering the Code

Per the rules of Wordle, we know that the answer contains the letter O, and that the last letter in the five-letter sequence is C.

If the Wordle connection is completely accurate, it means that whatever the answer is, does not contain the letters Q, U, I, N, B, E, K, Y, R, W, S, T, I, and X.

That leaves the letters A, C, D, F, G, H, J, L, M, O, P, V and Z.

WWE has given no indication as to when the answer to this latest code will be revealed in full.

An NXT star has turned over to the dark side.

The July 12 episode of NXT didn’t end on a happy note. The main event featured an NXT Women’s Championship match between titleholder Mandy Rose and Roxanne Perez.

Perez was accompanied to the ring by Cora Jade. Perez thought she could trust her good friend and tag team partner.

After all, they currently hold the NXT Women’s Tag Team Titles. Jealousy eventually won out, however.

With the referee distracted during the title match, Jade took her tag title and nailed Perez in the injured ribs. Mandy Rose capitalized and pinned Perez to successfully retain the NXT Women’s Championship.

Perez had been selling the injured ribs as she was attacked in the infamous NXT parking lot earlier in the night.

It had been reported that WWE was planning on turning Cora Jade heel ahead of the recent NXT episode.

The news came as a surprise to many as Jade comes across as a natural babyface. Time will tell if she can find her groove as a rotten apple.

After the match, Cora attacked Perez with her skateboard and even broke it in half.

Cameron Grimes Speaks

Bron Breakker successfully retained the WWE NXT Title against Cameron Grimes last week in the main event of Great American Bash. Post-match, Breakker was attacked by JD McDonagh.

Grimes came out for a promo where he talked about how he learned from last week and doing the right thing can still not be enough. He said losing the North American Title was just life and losing to Breakker was just life. He said he is destined to be a loser and crashed into the sun. 

Out came JD McDonagh who talked about how after Grimes lost to Breakker, Cameron became old news. He said he was the latest news. Grimes called him an a**hole. They started to brawl before JD ducked out of the ring. 

Mandy Rose vs. Roxanne Perez

Last week, Perez and Cora Jade defeated Gigi Dolin and Jacy Jayne for the Women’s Tag Titles. Following the bout, Perez announced that she would be cashing in the title shot that guaranteed her of winning the Breakout Tournament.

At the start of the show, Perez was attacked in the parking lot. Later in the night, Rose came out for the match and cut a promo about Perez isn’t women enough to step up and challenge her tonight. She said she runs NXT and that will never change. Cora Jade came out and said Rose can shut up because her night isn’t over yet because the fans were promised a championship match. Jade said she would step up and take the title from Rose. Perez came out and was selling her ribs. 

The match started with Rose beating down Perez. Jade hit Perez in the back with the title and Rose hit the running knee strike for the win. Jade told Perez that she was shelfish before hitting her with the skateboard, which broke in half before it made contact. 

Apollo Crews vs. Giovanni Vinci

Apollo Crews vs. Giovanni Vinci was booked in a singles match. 

Their bout was set up in an in-ring promo segment on last week’s show. Vinci interrupted a Crews monologue and challenged him to face him. 

The match opened the show and was one of the better matches of the night. Crews was distracted by a fan’s phone and then Xyon Quinn attacked Crews o the outside that led to Vinci hitting a powerbomb for the win. 

Von Wagner vs. Solo Sikoa

Von Wagner vs. Solo Sikoa in a singles match took place. 

This match was made official after Sikoa interrupted a backstage promo segment involving Wagner last week. 

The match ended in a double count out. Post-match, they continued to brawl. We are getting a rematch after that finish.

Logan Paul Reveals Why He Signed WWE Contract

New WWE signee Logan Paul has revealed what made him sign with the company.

It was a surprise to wrestling fans when Paul announced that he had signed a contract with WWE. He impressed fans with his performance in a tag match with The Miz against Rey and Dominik Mysterio at Wrestlemania 38 Night one on April 2.

Despite having no prior experience, he showed great potential if he chose to continue professional wrestling. The Wrestlemania experience left an impression on Paul, and he shared on his Impaulsive podcast that it made him decide to sign a multi-year deal.

“…For me, there is a trifecta that I look for that decides what I do, and I say this with privilege because I can do this now because of the years, decades of hard work I’ve put in, but when I can mix passion, business and media all into one thing I’m like ultimate me, happy place,” said Paul.

He continued, “…When I did Wrestlemania, I had so much fun. I just had fun. I came back all my friends had fun. We were all smiling. That was awesome. I’m looking at the clips, and I can’t believe that was me.”

Paul also believes it will increase his brand by working with the WWE. “… It’s smart they pay well. WWE it’s a big organization, and media, it’s a show. It’s a great performance and entertainment, so I’m excited for this journey, and I’m well aware of how powerful of a launch pad it can be for whatever I want to do in life,” said Paul.

The new signee explained that he’s not as visible in the media as he was in the past and that this is an opportunity to leverage WWE for his brand.

Logan Paul vs. The Miz at Summerslam?

While speaking about his deal with WWE, Paul also revealed that he would be challenging The Miz at Summerslam on July 30th. It’s unclear if WWE will have Paul face The Miz in a singles match, but Paul confirms that he will be coming for the former WWE Champion.

After their tag team match at Wrestlemania 38 Night One, The Miz attacked Paul. After signing his contract, Paul warned his former tag team partner that he wanted revenge. On his podcast, Paul shared that he looks forward to slamming The Miz.

“…I will be coming for The Miz at Summerslam. He wants to team up with me think he’s delusional. He thinks we are still partners, and we’re cool. We’re not. I take this very seriously, and I will slam him hard,” said Paul.

The new WWE talent will be on Monday Night Raw on July 18th to confront The Miz. While Paul wants to face The Miz one-on-one, WWE could also look to do a tag team match instead.

Bianca Belair wants a match with Charlotte Flair in Saudi Arabia.

Belair mentioned the idea during an interview on “The Mayman Show.” Prior to WWE’s last Saudi show, Belair had a match with Flair that ended in a disqualification.

She’d like to run things back, but this time, in a Last Woman Standing match.

“What better place to do than Saudi Arabia?” Belair said. “I had a match with Charlotte Flair before Crown Jewel before we flew out, and it ended in a DQ, so we need to do it again … It could definitely be a Last Woman Standing.

“I mean, I feel like we are both women that would throw it all out there and throw it on the line and really show, like, who has what it takes, who really is the toughest of them all.”

Currently, Belair reigns as the RAW Women’s Champion on Monday nights and is locked in a feud with Carmella. She successfully retained her title against Carmella at both Money In The Bank and on RAW this week.

Flair, on the other hand, has been taking some time off after dropping the SmackDown Women’s Title to Ronda Rousey. She recently got married to All Elite Wrestling (AEW) star Andrade El Idolo.

It will be interesting to see how Flair is brought back creatively after her loss to Rousey, who also just dropped the SmackDown Women’s Title to Liv Morgan.

WWE Hall Of Famer Road Dogg reveals a “bad habit” Set Rollins used to have when he worked with him.

Road Dogg recently took part in a Q&A over on AdFreeShows, and was asked about “bad habits” that independent stars had when signing on with WWE. He actually used Seth Rollins as an example for this answer.

The Hall Of Famer explained that Rollins had a “bad habit” of not taking advice from his elders well, seemingly responding in a disrespectful way.

“He used to do this thing in the corner where he would jump up and down, and jump up and down, and run like he was in a mosh pit, and then just run and hit the guy with the forearm,” James said.

“And I thought, ‘Man, that’s so anti-climatic.’ It seemed like the build-up to it was bigger than the finish of it. So I went to him and told him that, and he said, ‘No, that’s what I do. I’m not changing it. That’s what I do.’ And I went to [Triple H] and I said, ‘Well, that kid, I’ll never talk to him again.’

“His bad habit was not saying, ‘Okay, thank you sir,’ or whatever and being respectful and then not doing what I said like every other young wrestler. At least pretend to respect what I’m telling you, you know what I mean? And what I was telling him was right.

“He did change it, and he did come up with something that was more [of] a bigger pop than the set-up to it. They had a ‘come to Jesus’ speech with him down there. And he changed his whole philosophy and perspective on how he was looking at stuff, and look at him now, man. On top of the world, doing some of his best work too, I might add.”

Of course, today, Rollins is one of the top stars in WWE. Over the course of his career “The Architect” has racked up four World Title runs, a Royal Rumble win, and so much more.

He had one of the more compelling rivalries so far thus year with Cody Rhodes, which was cut short due to Rhodes’ injury. Recently, he comes off of a failed bid at yet again becoming Mr. Money In The Bank.
