Booker T Names Possibly his “Only Regret” in Wrestling

0

Booker T may be one of the most decorated wrestlers ever, boasting two WWE Hall of Fame rings, but the former World Champion regrets never holding a pair of iconic tag titles with his brother Stevie Ray.

Before becoming a singles wrestler, Booker worked as one-half of Harlem Heat with his brother Stevie Ray and won ten WCW World Tag Team titles as a unit.

Speaking on the latest episode of The Hall of Fame Podcast. Booker said he wishes he could’ve won New Japan’s IWGP World Tag Team Titles with Ray before retiring.

“I can’t speak for my brother but I can speak for myself, that may be the only regret in my career that my brother and I did not win the IWGP World Tag Team Championships. That right there for me would’ve been icing on the cake really for the career. I know those guys, I know what wrestling means to those guys in Japan. It’s huge, it’s their bloodline, and to be a part of something like that [would’ve been great].”

After splitting with Ray in 1997, Booker would win several singles titles in both WCW and WWE.

Booker would not leave tag team wrestling behind entirely though and would later hold tag gold with the likes of Rob Van Dam, Test, Scott Steiner, and Goldust.

Update on WWE Superstar’s Gimmick Change

Character changes seem to be in the air over in WWE.

We’ve seen the likes of Madcap Moss recently undergo a much-needed change in direction. In Madcap’s case, he has ditched the suspenders and the bad joke gimmick in favor of a more serious attitude.

Fans have also seen Xia Li tease going back to her Tian Sha gimmick from NXT. That hasn’t materialized on WWE TV, however.

This WWE superstar, however, seems to have his new gimmick set for a big TV debut.

Fabian Aichner is Giovanni Vinci

Back in May, WrestlingNews.co reported that WWE officials had been discussing dropping aspects of Fabian Aichner’s character since he split from The Imperium. The thought was that he’d take on the Giovanni Vinci character on NXT.

Fightful has followed up on this report, confirming that Aichner will indeed be the one to take on the role of Giovanni Vinci.

It’s important to note that WWE has also trademarked “Gio Vinci,” so it’s possible there could be a slight alteration to the name in the future.

WWE Claims Cody Rhodes is Injured at Live Event

Cody Rhodes was scheduled to wrestle during a house show this past Saturday but he only made an appearance.

During an untelevised Saturday Night’s Main Event, Cody was set to face Seth Rollins inside the State Farm Center in Champaign, Illinois.

WWE ended up announcing that Cody Rhodes was “injured” and he ended up being replaced by Drew McIntyre. Drew picked up the win and after the match, Cody chased Seth off.

Work or Legit?

There’s no word on exactly why Cody didn’t wrestle last night. He’s been going one-on-one with Seth in a slew of dark matches over the past couple of months.

Cody is scheduled to face Seth at the Hell in a Cell premium live event tonight. Many suspect the “injury” WWE announced for Cody at the live event on Saturday was a work but time will tell if something else is truly at play.

SEScoops will have you covered with live results from the Hell in a Cell (see our predictions here) event.

Kurt Angle Health Update After Double Knee Surgery

0

Kurt Angle is not able to use his legs or back after his double leg surgery but he is doing intense rehab to get back on his feet.

The WWE Hall Of Famer underwent the double knee replacement surgery back on May 24. He noted that his recovery would be a tough process.

The wrestling veteran provided an update on his condition on his podcast. He claimed that he is ‘pretty much useless’ because he can’t use his back or legs:

“A week later, I’m not doing much better. It’s pretty brutal. Especially when you have both knees done at the same time. I never went through anything this difficult.

I also have a little bit of a back problem so I can’t use my legs but I can’t use my back. So I’m pretty much useless.”

Though despite the temporary troubles, Kurt Angle is keeping his spirits high. The former world champion revealed his rehab schedule and said that he is very positive about the long process:

“I go to a rehab facility three days a week over near my house and then the other four days I do five different sessions of rehab on my own. It’s a long process but hopefully, it will work out. It should and I’m very positive about this,”

Angle also revealed that he couldn’t straighten his legs before his surgery because of all the injuries he suffered throughout his career. This is why he had the knee surgery and they are now trying to straighten his legs.

What Vince McMahon Told AJ Lee Upon Her WWE Departure

0

The end of their WWE career has been a bitter experience for a lot of former WWE stars, but not for AJ Lee. According to the former Diva’s champion, her exit was exactly what it needed to be.

The former WWE star recently appeared on The Sessions with Renee Paquette. Among other things, she talked openly about her departure from WWE.

Lee first revealed how Vince McMahon reacted to her decision to leave. She claimed that the boss was very kind and told her that the door was always open:

“He was very kind. He was just like, ‘the door’s always open if you want to come back.’ and that to me was I don’t know like I know it’s different for some people, but to me, it was so important to go out on top on my own terms.”

‘Exactly What It Needed To Be’

AJ Lee mentioned how a lot of people get buried on their way out of WWE. To get a win at WrestleMania just before her departure, felt the right way to leave to the female star:

“Yeah, I appreciated that. I can’t speak for anyone else’s experience with them. For me, it was exactly what it needed to be.”

Lee teamed up with Paige to defeat The Bella Twins on WrestleMania 31. She competed in a six women tag team match the next night on Raw and then announced her retirement on April 3, 2015.

Joe Gacy Names Main Roster WWE Superstars He Plans on Facing

0

WWE NXT 2.0 Superstar Joe Gacy has set his sights on some of the promotion’s biggest names on the main roster.

Gacy was introduced as part of last September’s revamp of NXT into NXT 2.0 and has been prominently featured ever since.

The 34-year-old wrestler had been teaming with Parker Boudreaux, aka Harland, but he was released in April this year.

Speaking to The Wrestling Inc Daily, Gacy discussed his career so far and was asked who he’d like to face when called up to the main roster.

“Everyone can say they want a shot at Roman Reigns, right? That’s an easy answer. I would have to pick somebody like Kevin Owens, Sami Zayn, Matt Riddle, I mean, any of these guys. I’ve never actually had an opportunity in the past, so for me, it would be pretty big to be able to do that.”

Prior to coming to WWE, Gacy worked for CZW, where he is a three-time World Heavyweight Champion, and Evolve where he is a one-time Tag Team Champion with AEW’s Eddie Kingston.

At last night’s NXT: In Your House, Gacy came up short in the main event against NXT Champion Bron Breakker.

Per the stipulation, Gacy would have won the title had Breakker been disqualified.

Watch: 73-Year-Old Ric Flair Takes Top Rope Bump

0

Ric Flair is getting ready for an in-ring return later this year and he is taking top rope bumps at the age of 73 in preparation for the same.

The Nature Boy announced last month that he will be having a final match later this year. The bout is scheduled for Starrcast V on July 31, during the SummerSlam weekend.

While an opponent for him is yet to be announced, Flair has already started preparing for his in-ring return. He has been training with Jay Lethal to get back in the ring shape.

Ric Flair Takes Top Rope Bump Ahead Of Final Match

After teasing a top rope bump for his last match, the 16-time world champion shared the following video of taking a slam from the top rope on Twitter:

Ric Flair previously explained why he is making this commitment at his age. He explained that he wasn’t satisfied with his last outing and wanted to make things right.

His last match was broadcasted on Impact back in 2011. He competed against Sting in a singles bout in which The Icon came out victorious.

Who do you think will face the wrestling legend in his final match? Let us know your thoughts in the comment section below.

Tyrus Says John Cena Faked Bathroom Break To Guarantee Him WWE WrestleMania 28 Moment

0

Former WWE Superstar Tyrus has said he got the chance to perform at WrestleMania 28 because John Cena faked an urgent bathroom break.

For the April 2012 show, Tyrus, then known as Brodus Clay, danced on stage with several women dressed as his ‘momma’ as part of his Funkasaurus Rex character.

The segment preceded the main event between John Cena and The Rock: a match that had been announced a year in advance.

During a recent interview with Insight with Chris Van Vliet, Tyrus said that due to earlier matches going long, there were talks about cutting the segment.

“They were heavy on time, they had gone over and he’s [Vince McMahon] like, he was shaking his head, and I think he was talking to Michael Hayes and another one of the producers and he was like, ‘I think we’re gonna have to we have to cut it.’ Then all of a sudden, Cena was getting ready, he’s right behind me and he looks at me and goes, ‘I have to go to the bathroom.’

“I went, ‘What?’ He’s like, ‘I have to go to the bathroom. I don’t know, usually I go the bathroom I don’t know, what, eight minutes? Six minutes?’ I was like, ‘Six. I can get in six.’ He’s like, ‘Alright,’ and he just walked out of Gorilla. So now I had to go. So I went and I got my WrestleMania moment because Cena had to go to the bathroom.”

Cena would lose to The Rock in the main event but got his win back a year later at WrestleMania 39.

Tyrus was released from WWE in 2014 and after stints in Impact, won the NWA World Television Championship in August 2021.

Damian Priest Wants Former World Champion To Join Judgement Day

0

Damian Priest wants former world champion AJ Styles to stop fighting and join their Judgement Day faction led by Edge instead.

The former US champion recently had an interview with Bleav in Pro Wrestling podcast. He talked about things such as his upcoming Hell In A Cell match and more.

When asked which star he would like to join their faction next after Rhea Ripley, Priest took the name of Styles. Damian said that when he first came to WWE, AJ was on the top of the list of people he wanted to work with:

“AJ Styles. We need him to come over to the other side. I mean stop fighting against and fight with, fight alongside. When I first signed a contract to come to WWE, he was on top of that list of people I wanted to work with and I knew he would elevate me.”

Damian Priest continued to praise the Phenomenal One. He claimed that if you can’t have a good match with Styles, then you don’t belong in WWE.

The Judgement Day is currently scheduled to compete in a six-man tag team match against Finn Balor, AJ Styles, and Liv Morgan at the Hell In A Cell PPV this Sunday.

When AEW Found Out About CM Punk’s Injury

0

AEW found out about CM Punk requiring a surgery for his injury very late. It was probably the reason behind all the confusion about the future of the AEW world title.

PWinsider provided some behind the scene updates on the Straight Edge Star’s announcement. They noted that officials were aware that the AEW star had hurt himself after his six men tag match on Dynamite.

However, they didn’t get the confirmation that he will require surgery until Friday afternoon, only a short time before the broadcast of Rampage.

Despite the commotion, there were never plans for the former WWE star to relinquish the title. Chris Jericho was mistaken when he said the same and Y2J has since clarified his comments.

As far as his return is concerned, there is no definitive word on how long CM Punk will be out of action after his foot surgery.

AEW has since announced its plans to crown an interim world champion until the veteran returns. The company has followed UFC and taken this approach anytime there has been a problem with the reigning champion.

This Wednesday’s episode of Dynamite will see the promotion determining a #1 contender. He will go on to Forbidden Door on June 26, to compete in a match to crown the interim champion.

Santos Escobar, Cruz Del Toro & Joaquin Wilde vs. Tony D’Angelo, Troy Donovan & Channing Lorenzo in a six-man tag team match took place with the stipulation that the losing team will join the winning team’s stable.

This was the opening contest and they went full throttle. The finish was clever as Tony grabbed a crowbar while Santos had brass knuckles. Lorenzo was hit with the brass knuckles while Wilde was hit with the crowbar and Lorenzo landed on Wilde for the pinfall.

Gigi Dolin & Jacy Jayne vs. Katana Chance & Kayden Carter

4nxt

NXT Women’s Tag Team Champions Gigi Dolin & Jacy Jayne defended the titles against Katana Chance & Kayden Carter.

Two weeks ago, Toxic Attraction responded to a challenge from Chance and Carter for the match at the show and noted they will make them official at a championship summit. Earlier in the show, Dolin and Jayne were ambushed by Chance and Kayden Carter while they were accompanying Rose to the ring for her match against Indi Hartwell.

The match was the second bout on the card. It was a standard tag bout for the majority of it, but down the stretch, they hit some sweet tag team moves and Carter even connected with a cutter on the apron. The finish saw Dolin hit a nasty german suplex that dumped Carter on her head.

Mandy Rose vs. Wendy Choo

2nxt

WWE NXT Women’s Champion Mandy Rose vs. Wendy Choo was booked.

After weeks of teasing the bout, Rose defended the NXT Women’s Title against Hartwell two weeks ago. Choo attacked her and dumped a bag full of balls on Rose before holding up her title.

The match was mostly comedy although it was dominated by Rose, who destroyed Choo’s pillow. Choo hit a drop kick. Rose pulled her off the top rope and hit a running boot.

Pretty Deadly vs. The Creed Brothers

3nxt

WWE NXT Tag Team Champions Pretty Deadly defended their titles against The Creed Brothers.

It all started when Pretty Deadly, who are former NXT UK Tag Team Champions, made their NXT 2.0 debut by attacking The Creed Brothers in April as they were revealed as the mystery attackers. Pretty Deadly then won the NXT Tag Team titles in a gauntlet match on April 12 that also featured The Creed Brothers.

The match was controlled by the challengers. At one point, the Creeds had them in double submissions. Julius sold for a few minutes as the champs controlled him. Brutus got the hot tag and cleared house. The Creeds with a powerslam then a shooting star press then a clothesline for the win.

Bron Breakker vs. Joe Gacy

1nxt

WWE NXT Champion Bron Breakker vs. Joe Gacy served as the main event of the show.

Breakker previously beat Gacy on an episode of NXT 2.0 last month to retain the title. Gacy and his druides later attacked Breakker, which led to Breakker wanting revenge. Gacy then proposed the stipulation, which Breakker also agreed to – if Breakker got DQ’d then he would lose the title.

The match saw Gacy control him in the early going. Bron hit a series of shoulder blocks then an outside dive. Gacy did the old Eddie Guerrero chair spot. There was an announce table spot where Gacy was speared off the apron. Bron with a bulldog off the middle rope for 2. Bron tossed the chair away and Gacy hit a low blow for 2. Bron with a spear then hit his finisher for the win.

Bron Breakker Retains WWE NXT Title At In Your House

0

WWE NXT Champion Bron Breakker made his latest title defense against Joe Gacy in the main event of the In Your House event in Orlando, Florida at the Performance Center on Peacock.

The match had the stipulation that if Bron got DQ’d then he would’ve lost the title. The bout saw Gacy beat him down in the early going with holds and chops. Bron hit an outside dive. Gacy did the old Eddie Guerrero chair spot but a second referee stopped the main one from DQing Bron. Gacy was speared off the apron through the announce table. A near fall came when Bron tossed the chair away and Gacy hit a low blow. The finish saw Bron hit a spear then his finisher.

https://twitter.com/WWENXT/status/1533272706111750144%20

Their first match came on the Spring Breakin’ edition of NXT 2.0 last month where Breakker went over. On the May 17th edition of NXT 2.0, Breakker responded to Gacy’s invitation to join his movement and declined. However, he did accept Gacy’s challenge to a title match at In Your House. Gacy then added the stipulation.

Breakker won the NXT Title for a second time on the April 4th edition of Raw when he beat Dolph Ziggler. Breakker previously won the NXT Title from Ciampa at New Year’s Evil in January from Ciampa.

The Creed Brothers Win Tag Team Titles At WWE NXT In Your House

0

NXT Tag Team Champions Pretty Deadly defended their titles against The Creed Brothers at Saturday’s WWE NXT In Your House event.

The match, held in Orlando, Florida at the Performance Center on Peacock, the challengers controlled the action early and even had them in double submissions.  The champions eventually got in control and beat down Julius for a few minutes. Brutus got the hot tag and just started throwing Elton around. The finish saw Brutus hit a powerslam then Julius with a shooting star press.

Pretty Deadly made their NXT 2.0 debut by attacking The Creed Brothers in March as they were revealed as the mystery team that had previously attacked The Creed Brothers at NXT Roadblock.

Pretty Deadly won the NXT Tag Team titles in a gauntlet match on April 12 after the titles had been declared vacant due to Nash Carter of MSK being released by WWE.

WWE holds the fallout episode from this show of NXT on Tuesday. It will be interesting to see if WWE continues this feud or goes in a different direction. Either way, they put on one heck of a match that delivered.

Carmelo Hayes Wins North American Title At WWE NXT In Your House

0

NXT North American Champion Cameron Grimes defended the title against Carmelo Hayes at Saturday’s (June 4, 2022) WWE NXT In Your House event in Orlando, Florida at the Performance Center on Peacock.

The match saw them go back and forth early. Grimes botched a move and Hayes hit a major league codebreaker for 2, which Grimes sold very well. Grimes with a posionronna that sent Hayes to the floor and Grimes followed it up with an outside dive. The finish saw Grimes miss a dive in the corner and Hayes hit the leg drop off the top rope.

https://twitter.com/WWENXT/status/1533252011885481985

The bout was announced on the May 10th edition of NXT during a n in-ring promo segment with Grimes and Solo Sikoa as  Sikoa declared himself the top contender, which Grimes agreed with. However, he would only give him the shot if he could get by Hayes. Hayes and Trick Williams then attacked Grimes, but Sikoa made the save.

They worked a tag team bout against Hayes and Williams on the May 17th edition of NXT.

Grimes retained the North American title in a triple threat match against Hayes and Sikoa at Spring Breakin’ after winning the title on WrestleMania weekend at NXT Stand & Deliver by beating Hayes, Sikoa, Grayson Waller, and Santos Escobar in a five-way ladder match.

Io Shirai Out Of Action With An Injury

0

Io Shirai was the top star in the WWE NXT women’s division prior to the last months of the black and gold brand, but she was put into a tag team after the brand was revamped and went to NXT 2.0.

Io hasn’t been seen on WWE television for a while and there’s a good reason for that as the former NXT Women’s Champion is injured.

Fightful Select reports Shirai is out of action with an injury. It’s unclear exactly what the injury is, but she hasn’t wrestled in over two months so it’s serious enough that fans might be waiting even longer to see her return to in-ring action.

One source said that they hope that Shirai is healed up by the summer. With Io being one of the best wrestlers in the whole company and WWE continuing to move forward with younger stars with no wrestling background, WWE  could really use a veteran with her skills around.

Shirai hasn’t worked a match since NXT Stand and Deliver where NXT Women’s Champion Mandy Rose defeated Cora Jade,  Shirai, and Kay Lee Ray in a fatal 4-way bout.

Former WWE Star Was Turned Down By AEW

0

Former WWE and World Tag Team Champion Paul London has said he was turned down by AEW when he offered his services in a behind-the-scenes role.

London is best known for his time in WWE from 2003 to 2008, where he won the WWE Tag Team Titles twice, the World Tag Titles once, and had a brief reign as WWE Cruiserweight Champion.

Speaking on Cafe De Rene With Rene Dupree London recalled trying to get a role with AEW and being quickly turned down.

“Last year, there had been very loose discussions between myself and [AEW], and it was more so like, ‘Hey, I would like to help. If there is a way for me to help from like a coaching standpoint or producer standpoint’,” London explained. “Was shot down like, immediately. Like, ‘No, no, no, no, no. We’ve got enough coaches, got enough agents.”

After leaving WWE, London would later join Lucha Underground and both appeared as a character and worked as a writer for the show.

London’s long-time tag-team partner Brian Kendrick was set to make his AEW debut earlier this year and was scheduled to face Jon Moxley on the February 2, 2022, episode of Dynamite.

Kendrick was pulled from the match due to controversial comments from his past resurfacing, including spreading conspiracy theories about the Sandy Hook school shooting, the Illuminati, 9/11, and more.

AEW’s “Top Stars” are Reportedly Open to Signing with WWE

0

Some of the “top stars” of All Elite Wrestling could be working for Vince McMahon in the WWE when the time is right.

In February, Cody Rhodes left AEW after a three-year tenure with the promotion and returned to WWE at WrestleMania 38: Night One.

To date, Cody is the only AEW star to make the jump but his booking may cause others to follow in his footsteps.

According to a new report from The Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the impressive booking Rhodes has received has led many “top stars” in AEW to consider joining WWE when their contracts expire.

These top stars include names who had shown no interest in WWE and had made it clear that they would forever be loyal to AEW, before Cody’s return this past April.

While no names were given in the report, it’s known that MJF has teased joining WWE when his current contract with Tony Khan expires in January 2024.

On this week’s Dynamite, MJF cut a scathing promo against AEW and Khan and begged to be fired from the company he feels underappreciated in.

MJF has since been pulled from the company’s roster page and has had his merchandise removed from AEWShop.com.

As for Cody, he will face Seth Rollins at tomorrow night’s WWE Hell in a Cell Premium Live Event inside the titular structure.

This will mark the pair’s third PLE match with Cody winning at both WrestleMania 38: Night One and WrestleMania Backlash.

Another AEW Champion Dealing With An Injury

CM Punk isn’t the only AEW champion who is hurt.

During the June 3 episode of Rampage, Punk announced that he will be needing surgery due to an injury. While he won’t be relinquishing the AEW World Championship, an interim title will be put in place.

As mentioned, he isn’t the only AEW titleholder who is injured.

Scorpio Sky Injured

Reigning TNT Champion Scorpio Sky has announced that he has been dealing with knee issues. He aggravated the injury early in his recent title defense against Dante Martin.

Sky is hoping for the best.

https://twitter.com/ScorpioSky/status/1533125840355004416

“I went into last night’s match with my knee bothering me and unfortunately in the opening minutes I strained a muscle that goes from my knee up through my groin. My right leg was useless from then on.

“Despite that, wrestling in SoCal felt amazing even on one leg. Hopefully nothing serious and I’ll be back to defend again soon.”

It would be a tough break for AEW if two of its champions were out of commission for a period of time. The company was without its women’s champion Thunder Rosa on the June 1 episode of Dynamite due to illness.

It was said that before Double or Nothing, Rosa had also been dealing with nagging injuries. It’s currently unknown if she fully healed before her successful title defense against Serena Deeb.

AEW Announces Eliminator Series To Crown The New Interim World Champion

0

The big story coming out of last night’s AEW Rampage was that world champion CM Punk had broken his foot, and will be out of action for some time as he recovers from surgery. The Chicago Made man broke the news in front of the live crowd of Ontario California with tears in his eyes, but promised to come back stronger than ever.

Despite his injury Punk will not be relinquishing the title, and instead an Interim world champion would be crowned at the June 26th Forbidden Door pay-per-view in Chicago. While there was some confusion during the broadcast as to how exactly this would happen, AEW provided the full details in a press release that dropped earlier today.

An eliminator series will be held.

This week’s Dynamite will open up with a battle royal matchup featuring all AEW talents. The winner of the battle royal will face the #1 ranked Jon Moxley in the main event of that very same episode of Dynamite, with the winner of that match advancing to the main event of Forbidden Door. This replaces the previously scheduled CM Punk vs. Hiroshi Tanahashi bout.

However, Tanahashi still has an opportunity to be in the Forbidden Door main event. The Ace will take on Hirooki Goto in an eliminator singles-matchup at NJPW’s Dominion pay-per-view on June 12th. The winner of that bout will advance to the main event of the Forbidden Door, where they will face the AEW competitor.

Whoever is victorious in the main event of Forbidden Door will be crowned the new AEW interim world champion.

Check out the full press release below.

MJF-AEW Situation Shows Wrestling is at its Best When the Lines are Blurred

0

Worked shoots have been a part of pro wrestling for a long time. After all, there were years when wrestlers went to great lengths to protect kayfabe on the premise the business could only work if fans believed everything they saw to be legitimate sport. The matter grew more sophisticated after Vince McMahon openly acknowledged wrestling was a work, and all the more so during the Monday Night War era.

Particularly in the aftermath of the Montreal Screwjob, playing with the line between fact and fiction became a staple, and arguably a plot device WCW turned to too often and in clunky fashion. There’s still a place to blur the lines between a work and a shoot, though, and AEW and MJF have highlighted just how compelling creative choices around this line can be.

MJF was the Talk of the Wrestling World Heading into AEW Double Or Nothing

Wardlow vs MJF Double or Nothing

For Double or Nothing, AEW built an extremely compelling card with a number of matches hat looked great on paper, the promise of a historic moment or two, and a number of storylines appearing to reach a climax. However, when the day of the show rolled around, there was one aspect of it that superseded all others: what was going on with MJF, and would he even show up?

The rumors took a life of their own on the Internet. While it’s still not entirely clear what was real and what was for show, we do know AEW booked the PPV perfectly with MJF the first wrestler to walk out from behind the curtain. His appearance gave the show an electric feel out of the gate and prevented the questions around his status from distracting from the rest of the event.

Moreover, his match with Wardlow was executed perfectly. The extended squash paid off the storyline, with a babyface getting retribution and giving a heel his comeuppance, yes, but with the short, one-sided match also feeding rumors that MJF might be on poor terms with management, such that he was booked to look badly in the ring.

MJF Cut One Of The Greatest Wrestling Promos of Wrestling’s Modern Era

MJF's Pipebomb Po

The buzz around MJF leading into Double or Nothing contributed to an equally buzzworthy performance on the Dynamite after the PPV. MJF cut the promo of a lifetime as he criticized management, weaving in very real issues like Tony Khan signing former WWE talent to big money contracts and pushing them over AEW mainstays.

MJF’s promo was well-timed to capitalize on speculation about him, as well as the momentum AEW had coming off a major PPV. While opinions still vary pretty widely on MJF’s in-ring abilities, there’s little question he’s one of the best promo guys in the world right now. The worked shoot scenario set him up to succeed, and MJF exceeded every expectation with his riveting delivery.

AEW Has Committed To The Storyline

CM Punk and Tony Khan

Worked shoot storylines are difficult to pull off. Fans have seen enough variations on angles like MJF feuding with management that they’re inherently skeptical. Moreover, there are practical considerations like a wrestler keeping up the storyline on social media and shoot interviews, or questions about why a company would still be selling a performer’s merchandise if he’s on such rocky terms with them. Add on a never-ending stream of dirt sheets finding the inside scoop and it’s awfully difficult for the modern fan to suspend disbelief.

AEW and MJF have committed to what they’re doing, though. The degree to with The Wrestling Observer, Fightful, and others bit on the prospect of MJF potentially no-showing Double or Nothing after he skipped a meet and greet suggested that AEW had either artfully manipulated or deftly collaborated with these kinds of media outlets to sell their story, rather than having reporters undermine them.

The choice for MJF not to meet fans, itself, may have been part of the plan and while it’s ill-advised for AEW to make a habit out of false advertising or messing with the money fans put down for experiences like this, doing it one time to serve this story feels like a key part of making this angle work. Other choices like Tony Khan refusing to comment on MJF in the post-PPV media scrum and pulling MJF’s merchandise online have further reinforced uncertainty.

A Tradition Of Worked Shoots

CM Punk Pipe Bomb

MJF’s situation with AEW has drawn comparisons to other situations from the past twenty years. The degree to which MJF is publicly living his gimmick, with some fans suspecting he “went into business for himself” in skipping his meet and greet prompted memories of Brian Pillman’s “Loose Cannon” antics when he made a number of unorthodox choices on his own to cultivate a sense of chaos across his journey between WCW, ECW, and WWE.

In a similar time frame, the early stages of the New World Order angle in WCW had a similar ethos for the shock of seeing Scott Hall and Kevin Nash arrive in the promotion and hint that they were invading from WWE.

Moreover, MJF’s promo on Dynamite had harkened back to CM Punk’s Pipe Bomb on WWE Raw from 11 years. There’s a great deal of overlap when it comes to speaking to legitimate concerns about his employer within the confines of what was ostensibly a worked promo, complete with heeling on the crowd in the process. That promo and the angle to follow were key in elevating Punk to megastar status and the seeds are there for MJF to enjoy a similar type of growth.

Fans can’t yet know where AEW is headed with MJF, and it’s a testament to the success of the angle that there is a some doubt as to where the line is between a work and a shoot and whether it’s possible that, even if MJF is working, he still might be out the door to WWE when his contract’s up.

Nonetheless, for a promotion that has thrived off the quality of its in-ring product, AEW may well be telling its best out-of-the-ring story to date with MJF.

WWE Legend Thinks Hangman Page’s AEW World Title Run Deserved Better

One WWE Hall of Famer doesn’t believe “Hangman” Adam Page got all the perks of being a world champion.

Page lost the AEW World Championship at Double or Nothing on May 29. He was pinned by CM Punk after hesitation cost Hangman.

Page was considering blasting Punk with his championship but he decided against it. He went for the Buckshot Lariat but it was countered by the GTS.

Booker T on Hangman’s Run

During an edition of his Hall of Fame podcast, Booker T said he feels Hangman Page’s title reign lacked a big feel and it wasn’t through any fault of the former champion.

“As far as Hangman Adam Page, he’s a damn good worker. I don’t think there was a highlight put on his title run. I don’t think he got any of the glitz and glamor.”

“It’s almost like one of those things when you become the champion, but you’re not in the main event. You’re just on the show and you’re not the main event.”

Booker T went on to say that he did agree that CM Punk was the right choice to defeat Hangman. He was looking forward to seeing how long AEW could ride the “gravy train.”

Booker’s comments were made before AEW announced that Punk suffered an injury. As a result, an interim title will now be put in place.

There’s currently no timeline for CM Punk’s return but he will need surgery.

Beth Phoenix Tells Touching Eddie Guerrero Story

0

Eddie Guerrero not only inspired countless names to get into the wrestling business, but the late legend also helped aspiring wrestlers whenever he could. This list includes Hall of Famers such as Beth Phoenix.

The former divas champion recently took on her Twitter to tell a story about the late great star. She recalled the time when she was still working in the independent circuit back in 2002.

Phoenix noted that she was struggling in the ring. This is when Guerrero told her that it was all about getting back up after being knocked down:

“In 02 I met Eddie Guerrero. He kindly offered advice & helped me in the ring. Seeing I was nervous and struggling he said “The measure of a person isn’t how many times you get knocked down. It’s how many times you get back up.” Then he arm dragged me & said. “Get up!””

Beth Phoenix later got signed by WWE herself in 2004. She had a successful career, that includes multiple runs with the women’s title.

Unfortunately for The Glamazon, she never got to share the screen with Eddie. The wrestling veteran passed away in November 2005, months before Phoenix made her main roster debut in May 2006.
